Wiener Dog Derby & Other Weekend Possibilities

Strawberry Hill Blocktoberfest is from noon to 9 p.m. Friday on Sixth Street between Ann and Tauromee in Kansas City, Kansas. The festival, put on by Better Block, is meant to re-envision Sixth Street with bike lanes, pop-up shops, a beer garden and street art.

The Liberty Fall Festival is in historic downtown Liberty, Missouri, and runs Friday (11 a.m. to 9 p.m.) through Sunday (noon to 4 p.m.). There’s a carnival, craft vendors, a parade (11 a.m. Saturday), and fair fare (cotton candy, snow cones).

Spend Saturday morning on the farm in Bonner Springs, Kansas. The Bonner Springs Farmers Market (129 Elm St., Bonner Springs, Kansas) is from 8 a.m. to noon. Stock up on chili peppers, squash, handmade soap or hickory syrup. Saturday is also the opening day for Kerby Farm (15943 158 St.). The pumpkin patch, which is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. has a corn maze, farm animals and hay rides.

The Overland Park Fall Festival is Saturday in Santa Fe Commons Park (8045 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas). The farmers’ market opens at 7 a.m., there’s a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a parade at 10 a.m. and live acts (dancers, a puppet show, comedians and jugglers) throughout the day.

This is the last weekend for the Ivanhoe Farmers’ Market (3209 Woodland Ave.). The market is open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Fill your bag with vegetables, baked goods, kombucha or flowers.

McCoy’s Public House (4057 Pennsylvania Ave.) is hosting its second annual Wiener Dog Derby from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday during Westport’s Oktoberfest. The derby is a benefit for Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption and the Westport Business League. Dogs will also be available for adoption Saturday.

The Flying Horse Taproom (600 E. 63rd St., #100) and Brookside Wine & Spirits are hosting an Oktoberfest celebration Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The liquor store will be offering a tasting of Oktoberfest beers while its sister taproom next door will have pretzels, German sausages and a stein holding competition at 2 p.m.

Wheat Neighborhood Table (128 W. 18th St.) has opened in the former YJ’s Snack Bar space. The breakfast and lunch spot, run by photographer Jenny Wheat, serves salads, soups, avocado toast, grilled cheese, bowls and baked goods. Wheat Neighborhood Table is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. YJ’s, owned by artist David Ford, has moved to the Westside and is now open in the former Sylvia’s Deli space at 1746 Washington St.

Urban Prairie Coffee recently opened in the former Twisted Sisters space at 5606 Johnson Drive in Mission, Kansas. The new coffee shop is owned by Julie and Mason Hans, who opened the adjacent Mission: Board Games almost two years ago. The coffee shop serves Messenger coffee and C. Jacks’ quiche. It is in the same shopping strip where Sandhills Brewing is building out a taproom. Urban Prairie is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and Monday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
