Food Truck Friday, A Milk Bar & Other Weekend Possibilities

Food Truck Friday returns to Union Cemetery (227 E. 28th Terrace) from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. this Friday. The initial lineup for the monthly food truck series, put on by the Union Cemetery Historical Society, is The Waffler, Taste of Brazil and Bop N’ Bowl (Korean bowls, fried rice and potstickers).

Krokstrom (3601 Broadway) is a restaurant in a bit of transition. Owners Katee McLean and Josh Rogers have made a few callouts in the past couple months on social media asking for support to keep the business going. They will be closing Vildhast, the Scandinavian sausage and snack shop that they run, in the food hall Parlor on Saturday, April 27.

But some of the sausages (the curry Korv, which comes topped with curry mayo, ketchup, chips and cucumber sallad) and lunch favorites from Vildhast will start to appear on the menu at Krokstrom during a lunch and brunch service between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Paulie D’s Pizza (5735 Johnson Drive, Mission, Kansas) has opened in the former Dips & Sips space. The pizza spot is run by Jennifer and Paul Doring, who was a co-owner of Pizza Kings and Westwood Pizza. Paulie D’s is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Two words: gyro crawl. Sinbad’s Grill (7002 W. 83rd St., Overland Park, Kansas) is open less than a block from Mr. Gyro’s. Sinbad’s serves platters and sandwiches with falafel, kabobs, shawarma or gyro meat (spicy or standard), Greek salads, lentil soup and baklava for dessert.

In our house we celebrate with bubbles. You might consider doing the same when the Bubble Tap Trailer pulls up at the Flying Horse Taproom from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The trailer’s sales, along with sales of Scoby Masters Tea-Biotics kombucha, a portion of sales from Brookside Wine & Spirits and from the Flying Horse Taproom will benefit the Dream Factory, a charity devoted to making the dreams of chronically ill children come true.

The Mid-America Asian Cultural Association is holding its 2019 Asian Cultural Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Overland Park Convention Center. Check out martial arts demonstrations, dance and music performances, and a host of Asian cuisine. Tickets are $5 (children under seven years old get in free).

Make a day of it and swing by the Overland Park Farmers’ Market. This Saturday is opening day for the downtown market, which runs from 8 a.m. to noon, has everything from bison jerky and coffee (The Wild Way) to lip balm and Kansas wine. You can also fill your fridge with produce, cheese and eggs, or get transplants for your garden.

Get in a little bit of reading time and a bit of baking all at once. Chef Shanita McAfee-Bryant is hosting Give A Mouse a Cookie, a bake and read cookie class from 3 to 5 p.m.Saturday. Bake and decorate cookies, and grab a few pours from the Shatto Milk bar. Tickets are $35 for an adult-child duo.

Need a little extra incentive to get out there and run? Hurts Donuts is hosting a Back To The Eighties Hurts Donuts Run from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The 5K will be at Shawnee Mission Park Trails (7900 Renner Road, Lenexa, Kansas). They’ll be playing ‘80s music and costumes are encouraged. There will be coffee and donuts at the finish line.
