Ethnic Enrichment Fest & Other Weekend Possibilities

See the world without leaving Swope Park (4600 E. 63rd St.). The Ethnic Enrichment Festival is from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. There are traditional dance performances, crafts for purchase, and cuisine from across the globe — think crepes to ceviche. Admission is $5 (free for children under the age of 12).

Feel better about the sad state of your garden by catching an outdoor showing of “Little Shop of Horrors.” The Kansas City Public Library continues its Off-The-Wall film series with a showing from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Central Library (14 W. 10th St.), complete with popcorn and KC Bier Co. beer samples.

Hurts Donuts (8809 State Line) has arrived in Kansas City. The new location is in the Ward Parkway restaurant pavilion (next to Smitty’s Garage) attached to the Ward Parkway Shopping Center. The donut shop chain, based out of Springfield, Missouri, is open 24 hours daily.

Meshuggah Bagels (40 E. 13th St.) is open in downtown Kansas City. The new spot in the Power & Light District is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Meshuggah’s original location is in Midtown (1208 W. 39th St.) and they also have shops at 7096 W. 105th St. in Overland Park, Kansas, and 205 S. Steward Road in Liberty, Missouri.

The Garden Variety Soda Fountain is part art installation, part community conversation, and part actual soda fountain. Artist S.E. Nash created a soda cart that will dispense Sour Cherry Kombucha, Pineapple Jalapeño Kombucha and Pickle Kefir sodas made from ingredients and produce grown in the Rosedale Community Gardens. The fermented drinks will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the Early Street Garden (S. Early St. and 37th Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.)

The Kemper Museum of Modern art is throwing its fourth annual Block Party from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday. They’ll have live music, a movie on an outdoor screen, and food trucks. Check out Paul Henry Ramirez’s new exhibit, “Sweet On,” or hear him speak about his work at 6 p.m. Friday.

Veganism takes center stage at the second annual VegFest on Saturday and Sunday at The City Market Park. The festival will have yoga, cooking demonstrations, talks on the business of food, a beer garden and lots of vegan fare (Mud Pie, Pirate’s Bone, Mean Vegan, The Bite and Tea-Biotics, are among the food vendors).

Farmers’ Markets are still going strong across the metro. The Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers’ Market (at the intersection of SE Douglas Street and SE Second Street) runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or sell-out, whichever occurs first) Saturday. There are flowers and peaches and plenty of summer sweetness.

Spend some time with your partner and Julia Child as the Kearney Culinary Academy (105 S. Jefferson St., Kearney, Missouri) hosts Date Night: French Cuisine With Julia Child. The cooking class ($50) is designed for couples to create a series of French dishes from potatoes Anna to bananas Foster.
