Pie and coffee is not just for diners any more. Tippin’s Pie and The Roasterie are collaborating on a pie and coffee event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Get a flight of three pies, each of which has been paired with a specific coffee, a la peach pie and Guatemalan Huehuetanango, at the Roasterie Café (1204 W. 27th St.). On Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., The Roasterie hosts a food truck brunch with KC Pinoy, Greg-Co Foods, Taste of Brazil, and Ash & Bleu.
Novel (1927 McGee St.), co-owned by chef Ryan Brazeal and his wife Jessica Brazeal (the pastry chef), has opened in its new location in the Crossroads. Jonathon “Tex” Bush, a longtime fixture at Manifesto, is the bar manager. House pasta will be a new addition, Novel also has a bar menu featuring house square slices of pizza. The new space is more modern than the converted Westside house where Novel initially opened in 2013. Novel is open for dinner only, 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

McLain’s Market (1420 Crescent Road, Lawrence, Kansas) is now open in Lawrence. They’ve got classic pastries (cinnamon rolls, cup cookies) and savory options: a market slider comes topped with cheese, bacon, pickle,and Thou Mayest Coffee barbecue sauce. The new market joins a location in Overland Park and a sister spot, McLain’s Bakery in Kansas City. The Lawrence location is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Learn about native plants and then take some home at Go Native! The Missouri Department of Conservation and Missouri Prairie Foundation are holding the educational event — learn about seed balls and native trees — and plant sale from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (or sell-out) Saturday at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center (4750 Troost Ave.).
More of an animal person? The National Agriculture Center & Hall of Fame (630 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, Kansas) is hosting its Barn Yard Babies event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The family festival will have hay rides, pony rides, and, yes, baby animals.
Mother Nature may not be ready, but Farmers Market season has arrived. The Brookside Farmers Market (63rd Street and Wornall Road) opened last Saturday and runs Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market (SE Second Street and SE Douglas Street) runs from 7 a.m. to sell-out (roughly 1 p.m.) on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The joy of being an adult is that you can just go ahead and make dessert your dinner. White Tail Run Winery and Vineyard (2327 N. 400th Road, Edgerton, Kansas) is hosting a Girl Scout cookies and wine pairing event from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday. Get a flight of five wines each paired with a cookie.

Lean in, carnivores. The third annual Pig & Swig is from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the Power & Light District (between Baltimore and Grand and 12th Street and Truman Road). The focus is on barbecue, bacon and bourbon. The outdoor festival has a beer garden and your ticket includes tasting samples (Plowboys, Joe’s Kansas City and Donut King, are among the vendors), as well as bourbon tastings.
