Vox’s Jupiter Viewing & Other Weekend Possibilities

If playing softball beer in hand is not your thing, perhaps you’d consider astronomy with wine? Vox Vineyards is hosting a party to view Jupiter on Saturday night from 8 to 10 p.m. The Astronomical Society of Kansas City is bringing telescopes and Vox will provide the wine and a spot to see the stars. This is a ticketed event, but it’s also kid friendly (kids under six years old are free).

The Sundry (1706 Baltimore) is hosting a grand re-opening today to celebrate the addition of a 32-foot bar, where they’ll be serving coffee, kombucha, beer, wine, and house sodas. Brew Gallery will be running their coffee program and they’ve added a small plates happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. daily.

The third annual Strawberry Swing spring indie craft fair is Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Alexander Majors Historical House (8201 State Line Road). Snag dog biscuits from Beer Paws, microgardens, or artisan salt from Wood + Salt. Pita for Good, CoffeeCake KC, Werners on Wheels, and KC Pinoy will be on hand selling food, as well.

Jarocho South (13145 State Line Road) is open. Last September, we broke the news that chef Carlos Falcon was planning to open a second location. He runs Jarocho Pescados y Mariscos (719 Kansas Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas) and was interested in bringing his unique take on seafood — a blend of Mexican and Asian influences — to South Kansas City.

Jarocho South is in the former Jon Russell’s BBQ space. They’ve got $1 oysters on Mondays and Wednesdays. Jarocho South is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Don a sweet hat or a pair of suspenders (or both) and trot on down to The Derby Party hosted by the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone Boulevard) on Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. The Westside Local is making Southern fare and they’ll have cocktails with local spirits. Poppy’s Ice Cream is bringing the dessert, KC Crew has yard games, and the race will be up on a big screen. The Bridge 90.9 is a sponsor.

When food trucks gather, your belly wins. The fourth annual Kansas Food Truck Festival is Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m. The festival in the Warehouse Arts District (810 Pennsylvania, Lawrence, Kansas) will have live music, a beer garden, and 30 trucks. The event benefits Just Food. Tickets are $10 and children under 12 years old are free.

The Guadalupe Centers, Inc. is hosting a free Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Friday and Saturday at 1015 Avenida Cesar E Chavez. They’ll have live music, mariachis with a headliner of Los Lobos on Saturday night, and dancing. There’s also 5-Que, a 5K walk or run, on Saturday with a taco bar to follow.

After the taco bar, you can think about hitting up the 33rd annual Polski Day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at All Saints Parish (811 Vermont Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas). Load up on Polish sausage, pierogi, cabbage rolls, bourbon balls, and povitica.
