The Return of the Jewish Deli & Other Weekend Possibilities

The Jewish deli is back, Kansas City. Broadway Deli (2101 Broadway Blvd.) has opened in the former Pezzettino’s space. The deli, which has a menu featuring Chicago-based Manny’s Cafeteria & Delicatessen recipes and meats, has potato pancakes, eggs and salami, chopped liver, bagels and noodle kugel (noodle pudding).

The deli has counter service with indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor dining room is filled with kitsch: A wall with photos of famous people who have not dined at the week-old shop and a wall of regular people who do dine there that has yet to be filled. Broadway Deli is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Sweet and Simple (326 W. 63rd St.) — a boba tea shop with Vietnamese coffee (iced or hot) and edible cookie dough — has opened in Brookside. You can also get smoothies, including avocado and jackfruit. Sweet and Simple is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The Midwest has a wild connection to Tinsel Town. Heartland to Hollywood: An Evening With the Hennings Sisters is a dinner and conversation with Linda and Carol Henning at Ophelia’s (201 N. Main St., Independence, Missouri) from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Linda is an actress and Carol is a writer. They’ll tell stories about their late father, Paul Henning, creator of “The Beverly Hillbillies,” and their late mother, who wrote, “The First Beverly Hillbilly: The Untold Story of the Creator of Rural TV Comedy.”

The idea of starting a pop-up is that one day you might have your own brick-and-mortar space. The dream has been realized for Bay Boy Specialty Sandwiches (4706 Holly St.), which began as a pop-up inside Jonny Jo’s Pizzeria (1209 W. 47th St.). The draw for Bay Boy is the Dutch crunch bread — the bread from San Francisco that has not yet taken over the known world (sourdough being it’s more well-known sandwich counterpart) — which is a dense roll with a crackly, slightly sweet top. The sandwich shop is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Consider the El Jefe — a take on a Cuban with house hot sauce.

Bun Mee Phan is relocating. The bahn mi and Vietnamese donut shop closed earlier this week at 4244 North Oak Trafficway. The new location will be just two blocks away at 4011 North Oak Trafficway, across the street from In a Tub. When Bun Mee Phan reopens, we’ll let you know

Feel like sipping on some gin and jazz? Gin and Jazz: A Great Gatsby Affair is from 8 to 11:30 p.m. at the Hall of Waters in downtown Excelsior Springs, Missouri. The event, sponsored by the Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce, will be straight out of the 1920s. It’s a night of cocktails, faux gambling and dancing.

Sharks. Beers. Do you really need more incentive? Fins & Flights, a beer-themed evening inside of Sea Life (2475 Grand Blvd.), is from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday. The aquarium will have Double Shift, KC Bier, Crane, Cinder Block, and Boulevard beer on hand, alongside a nacho bar for folks over the age of 21. It’s shark week, just for one night only.

Eat your way across Shawnee, Kansas, from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The fourth annual Taste of Shawnee (11600 Johnson Drive), sponsored by the Rotary Club of Shawnee, is at Shawnee Town. Ruchi Indian Cuisine and Werner’s on Wheels will be among the restaurants and food trucks there. You can buy tickets, which come with five tasting samples, at advance or at the door. Beer and wine will be available for purchase separately.
