Overland Park is about to get another brewery.

Discourse Brewing plans to open at 7211 W. 97th St. in the Windmill Square shopping center. It would become Overland Park’s third brewery behind Brew Lab and the second Stockyards Brewing location that is still under construction.

The Overland Park Planning Commision recently approved a 10-year special use permit that’ll allow it to operate in the chosen location. The Overland Park City Council is expected to consider the plan on March 6.

The building Discourse chose formerly housed an insurance agency. Discourse plans to completely remodel the 2,900-square-foot building to include a taproom and seating in the front half and brewing operations in the back. There are plans to have views into the brewing space to allow customers to see the brewing process. The brewery will also have an outdoor covered patio.

Discourse is the brainchild of Matt Britton. Before opting to open his own space, Matt was a brewer at Bottlenose Brewing in Jacksonville, Florida. His plan for the brewing space is to both produce and can beer for distribution in addition to serving customers on site.

Beer Releases

Strange Days Brewing — 316 Oak St., Kansas City, Missouri — has just released Tolteca, a 8.6% ABV West Coast double IPA. The beer starts off with floral and fruity aromas before kicking you in the tastebuds. This beer is aggressively bitter with a malty backbone to help balance everything out.

Cinder Block Brewery — 110 E. 18th Ave., North Kansas City, Missouri — teamed up with Screenland Armour for the ultimate movie beer. The two of them brewed Fresh Popped, a 5% ABV kolsch-style beer with popcorn. The beer is clean and crisp with a hint of popcorn. The duo brewed it for the release of Marvel’s “Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania,” which was where the brew debuted.

Alma Mader Brewery — 2635 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri — came out with the newest version of their Optional Route pale ale. The latest version features Mosaic and Simcoe hops, which gives the beer a big tropical punch with flavors and aromas of peach, pineapple and grapefruit. It comes in at 5.8% ABV.

Diametric Brewing Co. — 949 N.E. Columbus, Lee’s Summit, Missouri — just released a new Belgian beer. It Walks In Soup is a 5.5% ABV Belgian pale ale. The brewery used French Elixir and Amarillo hops. Those hops give this beer the bitterness you’d expect out of a pale before the Belgian yeast helps the beer finish with fruity and spicy esters.

Free State Brewing Co. — 636 Massachusetts St., Lawrence, Kansas — released a classic 6.5% ABV West Coast IPA named Exodusters. The name stems from the Black men and women who fled the racially violent South and migrated to Kansas. This full bodied IPA features Amarillo, Strata, Cascade and Vista hops. It finishes dry with a light lingering bitterness.

Servaes Brewing Co. — 10921 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas — celebrated the Chiefs Super Bowl victory with a beer named after everyone’s favorite quarterback. Chief Mahomes Sour is 5% ABV cocktail-inspired beer. It was brewed with cranberry and lime before being fermented on top of whiskey-soaked oak spirals.

Pathlight Brewing — 11200 W. 75th St., Shawnee, Kansas — brewed and released a beer named after Shawnee’s sister city Pittem, a small city in the Flanders region of Belgium. The beer itself is a 9.2% ABV Belgian Tripel. Traditional noble hops give this beer floral aromas and flavors before the Belgian yeast takes over and gives this beer a spicy yet sweet finish.

Beer Events

Saturday, Feb. 25

KC Brew Fest is taking over Union Station on Saturday. The annual event features more than 40 craft and international breweries, as well as many of Kansas City’s best local breweries. General admission is $50.

Servaes Brewing Co. — 10921 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas — has a delicious self-guided pairing event on tap. The brewery is hosting a Girl Scout cookies & beer pairing in their taproom. There will be four different cookies paired with four different beers. If you want to bring a box or two home, Troop 996 will be on-site selling cookies from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Point & Flat BBQ will also be in the house serving up their delicious barbecue.

Crane Brewing Co. — 6515 Railroad St., Raytown, Missouri — is throwing its second annual Mad Crane Tea Party. The event will feature the special release of tea beers brewed with Hugo Tea. You’ll be able to get flights featuring all of the brews, drink out of specially crafted tea glasses and enjoy a beer croquet. 

Sunday, Feb. 26

Crane Brewing Co. — 6515 Railroad St., Raytown, Missouri — wants to help you increase your flexibility and strength with another iteration of their Sunday Sip ‘N Stretch yoga series. Teri Cartwright from Way of Life Yoga will take you through an hour long yoga flow open to any and all practitioners. All you need to do is bring a mat and be ready to go. After the class you’ll be able to enjoy one free beer as part of the $15 ticket.

KC Bier Co. — 310 W. 79th St., Kansas City, Missouri — has a special edition of Sunday trivia. The brewery will be using this event to help raise money for SOAR Special Needs. The organization helps provide a future for those with special needs by helping them secure employment, housing and more. The cost is $15 per individual or $100 for teams of up to 10.

East Forty Brewing — 1201 W. Main St., Blue Springs, Missouri — is hosting another Yoga & Brew class in their Mill Room. The class is open to everyone, including beginners, and is meant to help increase strength, flexibility and energy. Your ticket includes one free drink, alcoholic or otherwise, after the class ends. The cost for the class is $25.
