Fed Up Fest & Other Weekend Possibilities

Fed Up Fest, a benefit for Harvesters, returns from 2:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday at CrossroadsKC (417 E. 18th St.). There’s live music (The Strumbellas, Me Like Bees), booze (their Bar in a Box Truck with wine, cocktails and beer is charming) and pop-up tastings.

Smitty’s Garage (8811 Ward Parkway) is open in the Ward Parkway Shopping Center. They serve fresh-cut fries, a host of burger options (beef, turkey, bison, garden or chicken), and a 1/3 pound Nathan’s hot dog smothered in chili and cheese. Two more restaurants are slated to open before the end of the month at Ward Parkway. MidiCi is a a California-based Neapolitan-style pizza chain, and this will be their first location in Kansas City. Charleston’s will offer up American fare and opens Oct. 23.

It’s officially October on the calendar, which means you’ve still got opportunities to get out there for Oktoberfest. Chicken N Pickle (1761 Burlington St., North Kansas City, Missouri) is hosting an Oktoberfest Fall Festival from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday. They’ll have a beer tasting, stein hoisting and a build-your-own caramel apple station. Stonehaus Farm Winery (24607 NE Colbern Road, Lee’s Summit, Missouri) is hosting its Oktoberfest celebration from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Get in the Halloween spirit and find a curio or curiosity at Grimm’s Indie Faire from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at El Torreon (3101 Gillham Plaza). There will be live music, live painting and more than 50 craft vendors.

The Mid-Continent Public Library is in the midst of a delicious series on chocolate. As part of The World of Chocolate, there’s a Chocolate Class with Chef Tito at the Red Bridge Branch (11140 Locust St.) between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. Chef Tito will be leading a series of four 45-minute classes in his mobile kitchen. Registration is required, and this class is only for adults. Next Wednesday, Oct. 18, come meet me at The Business of Chocolate. I’ll be moderating a panel discussion for the Square One Small Business Services at the Woodneath Library Center (8900 NE Flintock Road) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The conversation will include local chocolatiers Vincent Rodriguez of Maps and Velo+, Christopher Elbow, Derrick and Julie House of Panache, as well as Jessica Antunes of Sweet Kiss Brigadeiros.

It’s time we changed the food pyramid. First change? How about wine and pie? Tippin’s Pie and KC Wine Co. (13875 Gardner Road, Olathe, Kansas) are putting together pies and vino in a tasting curated by Ferment Nation host and longtime KCPT contributor Doug Frost. The pie samples are free, but you have to buy your own wine flight. The vineyard’s tasting room is open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Bistro 303 (303 Westport Road) is hosting its fourth annual Swine & Wine for Aids Walk from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. It’s a whole hog roast, along with cocktails, wine and desserts from Q39 and Pierpont’s. Tickets are $50. There’s also a wine lover’s package ($120), which includes two tickets and a bottle of wine.

The Hammerhand Coffee Company (22 N. Main St., Liberty, Missouri) is throwing a birthday party to celebrate its first year in business. The party, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, will feature barbecue from the Mudhole food truck, cupcakes, beer specials and a GIF photo booth.

The Noodle World Tour 2, a noodle battle among Kansas City food trucks, is at 11 a.m. Sunday. Lifted Spirits Distillery (1734 Cherry St.) will host the competition as part of The Business of Food Trucks’ series. KC Pinoy, Tito’s BBQ & Kitchen, American Fusion and the Bochi Truck will create noodle dishes from around the globe to see which cuisine reigns supreme. The event will also be a tribute to Felix Suwito, the late owner of the Twisted Asian food truck, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.
