Sushi Burritos, The Art of Candy & Other Weekend Possibilities

Always thought of candy as an art form? The Vanessa Lacy Gallery (1600 Genessee St., Unit 161) is hosting an opening reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday for “Candy,” a collection of pieces inspired by confections. The gallery will have cotton candy from Cottontale and beer from Stockyards Brewing Co.

The world is better with a few bubbles. Just down the street from the Vanessa Lacy Gallery, Amigoni Urban Winery celebrates the release of its first sparkling rose with parties from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The winery in the West Bottoms will have dessert specials and a portion of the profits will go to Susan G. Komen, a non-profit looking to eradicate breast cancer.

Get ready for sushi burritos. Komotodo Sushi Burrito (13713 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas) is holding its grand opening from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. You start by ordering a burrito, rice bowl or lettuce wrap, which is stuffed with everything from raw tuna to grilled steak and then drizzled with jalapeno ranch, peanut sauce or sweet chili sauce.

One customer will win burritos for life and 50 more will win burritos for a year at the grand opening.  

Everyone tells you to have wine and chocolate, but the pairing you truly seek is cheese and beer. Green Dirt Farm is holding just such a pairing ($85), featuring Boulevard Brewing Co. beer, from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Try five beers and cheese combinations in a tasting led by Boulevard’s Kyle Hopkins — who oversees the food program at the Boulevard Tours and Rec Center.

If you’ve thought about gardening, but don’t know where to start, transplants are a good path to take. The starter plants are an inexpensive way to have a good chance at growing something. The KC Farm School at Gibbs Road (4223 Gibbs Road, Kansas City, Kansas) is hosting a transplant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Get tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, peppers and a wide variety of greens to help kickstart your garden.

Since it will take a few months for your garden to produce, get more immediate gratification at the Merriam Farmers’ Market at the Merriam Marketplace (5740 Merriam Drive, Merriam, Kansas). The market opened last Saturday and it is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays through September 28.  They’ll be live music, fruits and vegetables, local honey, jams, baked goods and (likely) morels.

Cinnamon rolls are a bit like pancakes in that the first time you make them, it may not go according to plan. Get a guide into the world of cinnamon rolls with Keara Masson, Rye’s pastry chef, who is teaching a class at Olive Tree (7044 W. 105th St., Overland Park, Kansas) from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Tickets ($65) include admission for two people and a dozen mini cinnamon rolls plus cream cheese icing.
