Party Like It’s 1860 & Other Weekend Possibilities

Do you long for a simpler time when butter was still churned by hand?

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Historic Farm site in Olathe, Kansas, is hosting a dinner ($49) straight out of the 1860s from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Staff in period garb will take you by stagecoach to the historic home and to see the animals on the farm. Then it’s beef, mashed potatoes and pound cake for dessert.

Head to downtown Excelsior Springs, Missouri, for a Paranormal Ghost Tour ($40) between 7 p.m. and midnight Saturday. The tour stops by the Historic Hall of Waters and includes the opportunity to use ghost hunting tools. Reservations are required.

The Campground (1531 Genessee St.) serves brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. That means s’mores French toast, a smoked salmon eggs Benedict or butternut squash salad. And since it’s brunch, that means cocktails. Perhaps a gimlet?

If you’d rather have your cocktail with a side of Dungeons and Dragons, head over to The Boardroom Family Pub (8725 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas). The newly opened restaurant and bar centered around board games serves up Shepherd’s pie inspired by “Game of Thrones” and brunch with items like Colonel Mustard’s Chicken Salad and The Hagrid Burger (a pair of ⅓ pound patties topped with four slices of cheese and bacon).

The next chapter for Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters is starting inside of a greenhouse. Startland News first reported that Cafe Equinox (7036 Nieman Road, Shawnee, Kansas) opened inside of Family Tree Nursery. Bo Nelson, one of the co-founders of Thou Mayest, has built out a cafe inside of his family’s nursery business. The grand opening is from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Limitless Brewing Co. is dropping a cookie stout collaboration with Yummylicious Cookie Co. The limited release, which will be tapped at 7 p.m. Friday, was made with Yummylicious Tuscan Espresso cookies.

If you’re looking for sour instead of sweet, East Forty Brewing (1201 W. Main St., Blue Springs, Missouri)  is also releasing Thar She Blows Gose (3.9% alcohol by volume), a kettle sour (beer is soured and fermented in a steel tank) with coriander and salt.

Torn Label’s first beer is joining its yearly lineup in cans. Hang ‘Em High IPA will be celebrated this weekend with a pair of launch parties. The reason this beer is neat is because Torn Label changes the hops with each batch it brews. The brewery will also change the color of the plastic carrier atop the four-packs to show that there’s a new batch with a different hop available. On Friday night, you can get the beer at Bier Station and at noon on Saturday at the Torn Label taproom.

But if you’re interested in learning the basics of bees and becoming a beekeeper, you can start with an Introduction to Beekeeping class ($60) from the Kansas Bee Company and Cass County Bee Club at the  University of Missouri Extension building (201 W. Wall St., Harrisonville, Missouri) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
