Hayward’s New Home, Fried Lobster Rolls & Other Weekend Possibilities

June 13, 2019  |  Jonathan Bender  |  3 min read

After more than three decades in Lenexa, Hayward’s Pit BBQ has moved. The barbecue standby is now open at 10901 W. 75th St. in Shawnee, Kansas. The Kansas spot has the classics — ribs, burnt ends, and sides (beans, cheezy corn bake, macaroni and cheese) — and some of their own barbecue creations: (Sweeney’s Southern Pulled Pork Sandwich comes topped with coleslaw and an onion ring) and Kyle’s Killer Sausage (Krizman’s smoked sausage topped with cheese, Helga’s hot mustard and giardiniera).

Soiree Steak & Oyster House (1512 E. 18th St.) — surf and turf with Southern influences — is open in the 18th and Vine District.

The oysters come raw, fried or charbroiled. Soiree also serves crab cakes, fried green tomatoes and has a Southern Lobster Roll (tempura-battered, fried lobster) on its Happy Hour menu. Chef and owner Anita Moore also owns and operates Soiree New Orleans Bistro in Smithville, Missouri.

Buns Up, which serves sliders, is open in Parlor (1707 Locust St.) in the former Vildhast booth space. Buns Up is a second concept from Derrick and Kylie Foster, who run Mother Clucker (the Nashville-style hot chicken stand on the second floor of Parlor). Get a bacon cheeseburger slider, a vegan slider with a Beyond Burger, a Napoleon-Dynamite-keep-some-in-your-side-pocket amount of tots or curly fries, and root beer floats.

Arts in The Park is in Macken Park in North Kansas City, Missouri, on Friday (5 to 10 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Drink craft beer, listen to live music and shop at booths filled with local artists and makers at the festival put on by North Kansas City Parks & Recreation.

The Merriam Farmers’ Market (5740 Merriam Drive, Merriam, Kansas) is from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Stock up on tomatoes, peaches and strawberries and get lunch from Eat Schmidt, a food truck serving sandwiches, tacos and loaded tater tots.

The Weston Orchard (18545 Co Rd. H, Weston, Missouri)  is throwing a Cherry Fest from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The reason to go is to pick-your-own cherries, but there will also be a cherry pit spitting contest (12 p.m.), live music and face painting for kids. Admission is $3.

The best fun runs involve a lot more fun than run. So skip the run and opt in for the fun. KC Wine Co. & Donutology are holding a “Wine & Donut Dash,” which is actually a walk (not a run) through the vineyards, alongside donut decorating, wine slushes and hard cider samples from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Tickets ($40), include a t-shirt, glass, donuts and samples.

Harp Barbecue and chef Anourom Thompson are collaborating on a Loatian barbecue meal this Sunday for Father’s Day at Crane Brewing Co. (6515 Railroad St., Raytown, Missouri).

Think about making it a long weekend. Char Bar (4050 Pennsylvania Ave.) hosts Rosé & Croquet ($15) from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. It’s yard games and rosé samples.
