Dinner is getting ready to take to the streets. With spring in swing, food trucks are officially out and about across the metro. The unofficial kickoff is Food Truck Friday — the six-year-old series from The Kansas City Star. Over the next six First Fridays, food trucks will gather in the downtown parking lot of The Star to debut everything from boneless wings to a reverse-engineered burger (read about it here). It’s 5 to 8 p.m. tonight with nine trucks (waffles, push-up cakes, and French bread pudding are on the menu) and there’s a beer garden.
While you’re there, you can walk over a few blocks and catch the grand opening of KC Wineworks (1829 McGee) — the new tasting room and winery in the Crossroads — from 5 to 9 p.m.
Make it a local weekend. There’s a Made in Kansas City pop-up at HMK (4710 Broadway) on the Plaza from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Check out Nickel & Suede and Bernie Lee, and sip on cocktails made with Boozy Botanicals.
Want to meet a farmer? Always thought you could be best friends with a cheesemaker? Find out at the Eat Local + Organic Expo. The local gathering of farmers, eaters, and food producers is put on by the Kansas City Food Circle and will be held this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Johnson County Community College and next Saturday, April 9, from at Penn Valley from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The food truck fun continues Sunday with The Roasterie’s Food Truck Brunch. They’ll have a gathering of trucks at 1204 W 24th Street, as well as coffee from their cafe from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jazzy B’s, the Funnel Cake Truck, KC Pinoy and Plantain District will be on hand.
Need to kickstart your garden? Cultivate Kansas City is having its annual transplant sale. Pick up certified organic transplants at their Gibbs Road Farm greenhouse (4223 Gibbs Road) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. They’ll also be selling plants (drop-ins Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 4-15) on Saturday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It’s Opening Night for the Kansas City Royals this Sunday. Whether you’ll be at Kauffman Stadium or perched on a bar stool, there’s still plenty of opportunities to eat like you’re at the ballpark.
