Doughnut Lounge’s Breakfast & Other Weekend Possibilities

Doughnut Lounge (4117 Pennsylvania) is adding non-doughnut breakfast items to its menu on Saturday. That means you can get biscuits and gravy, buckwheat coffee pancakes with bourbon maple syrup, or chipotle chicken and hash. The non-doughnut breakfast items will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Not all tap lists are created equally. Green Room Burgers & Beer (4010 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suite D) is celebrating its fifth anniversary today. They’ll have a pair of new brews — a double saison and a cask stout – beginning at 12 p.m. They’ll also have a few guest taps of note, including Bell’s Hopslam and Perennial Sump.

One should always know the nearest coffee shop, it’s important to have caffeine at the ready. So, add a new location to your inner CPS (coffee positioning system). Mother Earth Coffee, from Paris Brothers Specialty Foods, Inc. (the local parent company behind the Parisi brand and cafes), has opened a new cafe at 3504 Gillham. The shop is on the first floor of the International apartment buildings and is open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Howard’s Cafe (1708 Oak Street) added a liquor license, which means you can get now get beer (or sparkling wine) with your burger. Don’t forget fries too. They’re hosting a First Fryday celebration with the band Tiny Flowers from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight.

Always thought you could be a taco eating champion? Now you can put your mouth to the challenge. Palomino’s Restaurant (10219 E US Highway 24, Independence, Missouri) hosts its sixth annual Taco Eating Contest on Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. You’ve got to eat 15 fried ground beef tacos in five minutes. It’s $20 to enter at the door.

Cultivate Kansas City is hosting its 12th annual Farmers & Friends Meeting at Second Presbyterian Church (318 E 55th Street) on Saturday. This is a chance for farmers and consumers to chat about the Kansas City food system. The doors open at 8 a.m. for pie and coffee. The meeting, which includes presentations and workshops, runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring pie and a dish for a potluck.

Kabuki Sushi (333 W Meyer Boulevard) is a new venture from Ted Hamada. Hamada operated Kabuki Japanese Restaurant in Crown Center for nearly three decades before closing in 2013. His new Brookside restaurant is serving a sushi menu.

Will your Super Bowl party have a whole hog roast? Helen’s J.A.D. Bar & Grill (2002 Armour Road) can check that box. The Sunday afternoon celebration starts at 2 p.m. and $25 gets you roast pork, sides and two glasses of Boulevard. If you’re more of a “chili with football,” kind of fan, Johnny’s Tavern (8262 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas) is hosting its annual chili contest.
