Celebration At The Station, Catio Party & Other Weekend Possibilities

May 23, 2019  |  Jonathan Bender  |  3 min read

Eat tacos. Help folks. Guadalupe Center is throwing a taco dinner between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday. It’s four fried tacos and Mexican rice for $7. The taco sale benefits the center’s youth recreation program. Place your order by calling 816-421-1015.

A tradition that started on the West Side has come to the Crossroads. Ibis Bakery is holding a Friday Cheese Slipper night — warm, gooey cheese and toppings (think mushrooms or egg or tomatoes) atop ciabatta fresh out of the oven — at Messenger Cafe (1624 Grand Blvd.). The sale starts at 6:30 p.m. and goes until they sell out.

You can now drink your S’mores. Limitless Brewing Co. (9765 Widmer, Lenexa, Kansas) is releasing S’Morter at 4 p.m. Saturday. The porter is made with six pounds of S’mores cereal.

The McFadden’s patio may never be the same. The Power & Light sports bar is holding a Catio Party, where owners can bring their cats between 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday. They’ll have cat-themed cocktail, beer specials, cat treats and an artist to create portraits of you and your cat.

Pokè is coming, Overland Park. Freestyle Pokè (7108 W. 135th St., Overland Park, Kansas) is holding the grand opening for its second area location — the first is in the River Market — at 11 a.m. Friday.

The concept works like Chipotle. You pick your size of bowl, a base (rice, quinoa, zoodles), protein (raw ahi tuna, tofu, shredded chicken), mix-ins (snow peas, edamame, mung beans), marinade (rosemary tamari, sriracha ponzu), toppings (spicy cashews, pickled ginger) and sauce (sriracha mayo, eel sauce). And then they mix it up and hand it over.

It’s Memorial Day weekend and the Bank of America Celebration At The Station is this Sunday. The 17th annual celebration has a free concert by the Kansas City Symphony (which starts at 8 p.m.) that ends with a fireworks display. Head down to Union Station with your lawn chair or blanket — the grounds open at 3 p.m. — or listen live on Bridge 90.9.

Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen (1526 Walnut St.) wants you to Stop & Drink the Rosè. The Crossroads wine bar is holding a tasting of more than 30 rosè wines between 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20. The event is a benefit for Susan G. Komen Kansas and Western Missouri.

The eighth annual Westport Block Party is from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday. The party is outside Kelly’s Westport Inn (500 Westport Road) and features a DJ. Admission is $10, which includes a beer and koozie.

Do you have Monday off? Novel (1927 McGee St.) is throwing a Memorial Day Party with a picnic buffet (shrimp cocktail, loaded potato skins, barbecue ribs, pastrami burnt ends, banana pudding, strawberry rhubarb crisp) and an open bar. Tickets are $37.
