BBQ Duck Tacos, Christmas Sangria & Other Weekend Possibilities

December 20, 2018  |  Jonathan Bender  |  3 min read

Say it with me. BBQ. Duck. Tacos. Mission Taco has opened its second area location at 5060 Main St. (the original is in the Crossroads at 409 E. 18th St.). The drinks range from Tiki (rum-fueled, tropical concoctions) to mezcal and tequila cocktails. The food is just as playful with carne asada on top of chile-crusted fries, a burrito with three kinds of pork (roasted, pork belly and spicy sausage) and a take on an egg-and-cheese sandwich with pickled jalapeños and smashed black beans.

The Ng family has a new concept in Ni Hao Fresh (6029 Metcalf Ave., Mission, Kansas). The founders of Bo Ling’s have created a fast, casual poke and stir fry restaurant. Build your own bowl with rice or noodles that can then be topped with fish (tuna, salmon), General Tso’s chicken, tofu, Korean beef, vegetables and sauce (wasabi mayo, Gochujang). You can also find Bo Ling’s classics like crab rangoon and vegetable spring rolls on the menu.

Spend some time with Prince this holiday season. Missie B’s (805 W. 39th St.) has a new show, Purple Reign: Party Like It’s 1499, that pays tribute to the late rockstar. The show hits the stage at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Thou Mayest (419 E. 18th St.) is throwing a goodbye party Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The coffee shop is moving — they haven’t announced where the new space will be located — and is throwing a party to celebrate four years in its Crossroads location. Thou Mayest will have bags of coffee for $10, DJs playing from noon to 9 p.m., and The Sundry will bring food.

Grain to Glass (1611 Swift Ave., North Kansas City, Missouri) will guide you through the world of mead — an alcoholic, fermented honey drink — from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The tasting is $15.

Explore Brazilian cuisine at Cafe Brazil by Lola (11441 Strange Line Road, Lenexa, Kansas) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The restaurant serves a Saturday special of feijoada, a black bean stew with rice and collard greens. Order cheese bread before and a brigadeiro (chocolate truffle) for dessert.

Whiskey could be your spirit animal. Waldo Thai (8431 Wornall Road) is hosting a holiday cocktail class ($35) from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Learn how to make three cocktails with Union Horse whiskey, and munch on Thai food while class is in session.

Sangria is an easy way to get more fruit in your diet. Jowler Creek Winery (16905 Jowler Creek Road, Platte City, Missouri) is serving its Christmas cranberry apple sangria from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday by the glass or jug (six glasses to a jug). If you enjoy the cocktail, the winery will also have at-home kits available for sale.
