New Missouri Map Signing

Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe is promising to sign a new congressional map this week that would make it tougher for Kansas City Congressman Emanuel Cleaver to win reelection.

Kehoe is also expected to sign a ballot reform measure that raises the bar for passing citizen-initiated constitutional amendments. If approved by voters next year, it would require future ballot questions win majority support in all eight of the state’s congressional districts.

Both measures are being challenged in court as unconstitutional.

Mahomes Kelce Steakhouse Finally Opens

The new Mahomes Kelce steakhouse opens this week.

The food better be amazing … has there ever been more relentless coverage of a local restaurant opening?

1587 Prime greets its first paying customers on Wednesday night, which coincides with Patrick Mahomes’ 30th birthday.

The two-story restaurant is located inside the Loews Hotel at 15th Street and Baltimore Avenue.

Temporary Jail Moving Forward

Kansas City leaders have finally agreed on a location for a new temporary jail.

On Thursday, the City Council is expected to approve a modular facility that could house up to 100 detainees next to a city-owned tow lot along Front Street, near the Missouri River.

It’s scheduled to open in advance of the World Cup.

Currently, the city doesn’t own a jail and is contracting out with two rural Missouri counties to house the most serious offenders.

If you want to help Kansas City put on the World Cup, today is the deadline to sign up.

Kansas City needs more than 6,000 volunteers. They’re totally unpaid, but good news … you get a four-piece uniform to wear that you get to keep.

Is that enough of an incentive for you to sign up for a minimum of nine 8-hour shifts?

In Other Sports News …

The last time the Kansas City Chiefs started a season with two consecutive losses was in 2014. This marks the first time the team has had an 0-2 start in the Mahomes era.

Royals Last Home Game: The odds may be stacked against them, but the Kansas City Royals are trying to keep their slim playoff chances alive this week. The Royals are off today before returning to Kauffman Stadium to host the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. There are just 12 games left in the regular season. The Royals last home game is on Sunday.

The Big Tower Relighting

Are you ready for the big lighting ceremony for the huge broadcast tower right above our heads here at Kansas City PBS?

What is actually the KCTV5 tower is being relit this week as a massive, illuminated art installation, ahead of the World Cup.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas will flip the switch this Thursday at 9 p.m. in our parking lot at 31st Street and Grand Avenue.

When it was erected in 1956, it was viewed as an engineering marvel, 18 feet taller than the Eiffel Tower.
