Weekend Possibilities | Winterfest at Worlds of Fun, Mickey’s Hideaway in Westport, and Lenexa’s New Brews

There are about 48 hours between leaving work on Friday and the time you start thinking about work once again on Sunday night. Weekend Possibilities is your roadmap for food, drinks and fun for the perfect Kansas City weekend.

Friday, Nov. 22

4 – 10 p.m. Winterfest kicks off this weekend at Worlds of Fun (4545 Worlds of Fun Ave.). The annual holiday celebration transforms the park with thousands of lights and features festive live shows, ice skating, cookie decorating, iconic holiday characters and much more. In addition to holiday fun, select rides will operate during Winterfest hours. Be sure to check online for a full list of activities. Ticket prices and add-on options vary.

If you’re looking for somewhere to kick off the weekend, consider dinner at Mickey’s Hideaway in Westport (4057 Pennsylvania Ave.). Formerly known as McCoy’s and under the same management, the corner property at Pennsylvania and Westport Road now puts out a vintage vibe and its menu includes few classic McCoy’s favorites, in addition to new health conscious options. For your information, Friday’s special is the Brown Butter Lobster Rolls — until they’re gone. 

Saturday, Nov. 23

11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Get your pet’s picture taken with Santa on Saturday at Three Dog Bakery (4322 W. 119th St.). Pet owners looking for the perfect holiday card are encouraged to either walk in or call to set up an appointment with the big man in red. Photos are $20 and benefit  Friends of KC Animals, a local nonprofit that assists in covering a range of veterinary services.

11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Head over to the West Side along with the Lunch with Locals gang for an insider’s look at one of Kansas City’s hubs of Latino culture and heritage. Guide Kiara Watts will take the group on a tour of local restaurants, along with a few landmarks. The lunch and tour includes tastings and drinks. Reserve your spot for $50. 

1 – 4 p.m. Free Weekend Fun at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (4525 Oak St.) is getting in on the museum’s exploration of ancient Egypt. Families will be invited to decorate a paper collar with amulets inspired by the Egyptian art collection. In addition to arts and crafts, there will be an opportunity to search for women and goddesses of ancient Egypt in the gallery. 

8 p.m. Two members of the long-running improv television show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” will perform on campus at Johnson County Community College’s Yardley Hall (12345 College Blvd.). The Scared Scriptless Tour, featuring comedians Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood, will bring to life original two-man scenes based wholly on audience suggestions. It’s sure to be a hilarious evening to be enjoyed by all ages. Tickets start at $25.

Sunday, Nov. 24

Noon – 7 p.m. Limitless Brewing (9765 Widmer Rd.) brands its low-key space as “Beer centered and community focused.” The Lenexa brewery offers its tap room as a venue for a range of events ranging from Reggae Sundays and holiday meals to yoga. As for kegs, beer lovers can expect a little bit of everything. The Limitless beer list includes a seasonal Oktoberfest brew, a Fall Stout, a hazy IPA, a “Felt Cute” Saison and much more. 

4 – 6 p.m. There’s a Sunday evening happy hour at Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen (1526 Walnut St.) that’s certainly worth checking out. If you’re hungry, charcuterie and cheese boards, plus bites like pommes fries, pizza and daily taco creations highlight appetizer options. Perhaps more importantly, you can get $2 off any one of the joint’s lengthy wine-by-the-glass list, which features pours of all kinds from all over the world. Do you really, really love wine? 6 – 9 p.m. The Kritiq Creative Weekend is wrapping up three days of fashion, art and entertainment with its Fall 2019 Fashion Show at The Grand Hall Power & Light (1330 Baltimore Ave.). The show, featuring designers like Urban Jungle Life Clothing, Nujoad Designs, MADE MOBB and several others, will close Kritiq’s weekend showcasing artists, musicians and designers. Friday and Saturday’s events will be held at MADE MOBB on Southwest Boulevard. Tickets to the fashion show start at $40.
