Weekend Possibilities | Super Bowl Watch Parties, Black History Forum, Joe’s KC Open Sunday

It’s déjà vu all over again.

As Kansas City readies for Super Bowl LV against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a full weekend slate offers plenty to do until kickoff.

Friday, Feb. 5

8:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. Vintage Revival is back this weekend at Bella Patina in the West Bottoms, 1320 W. 12th St. Explore all three floors of the 25,000-square-foot antique store for vintage and refurbished furniture, clothing, decor and more from 80-plus vendors all weekend long. It’s worth getting there early, Bella Patina’s treasures are only available the first weekend of each month. Masks are required for entry.

11 a.m. – 7 p.m. If you’re looking to shakeup date night this Valentine’s Day, iFly’s “Love Is In The Air” package just might do the trick. Make reservations at the Overland Park indoor skydiving arena, 10975 Metcalf Ave., and ask for the Valentine’s special available through Feb. 21. The bundle includes four flights and two flight videos per couple. No previous experience is required. Prices vary.

7 p.m. There’s a chance those dance moves will be a bit rusty once the world returns to normal. Fortunately, Traidell Bradford and KC Friends of Alvin Ailey are here to help with a free First Fridays Virtual Hip-Hop Dance Class. Be sure to register for the Zoom class in advance and get a good stretch in beforehand.

Saturday, Feb. 6

10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. There are still tickets available for Disney on Ice Dream Big, Saturday at the T-Mobile Center, 1407 Grand Blvd. The show features favorite Disney characters like “Frozen”’s Anna and Elsa, “Coco”’s Miguel and of course, Mickey, Minnie and the gang, plus characters from “Aladdin,” “Moana,” “Beauty and the Beast” and more. Seating will be socially distanced. Tickets start at $20.

3 – 6 p.m. It’s most definitely chili season in Kansas City, especially considering Sunday’s big game. Sign up for Saturday’s Mission Chili Cook Off Curbside Edition, 3403 W. 53rd St., for a full meal to-go, plus the chance to win a hand-painted apron. Pull up and pick up one quart of Ad Astra chili, plus Cornbread Fixings Mix from Old Muffin Factory 3 – 6 p.m., then join the 7 p.m. Zoom meeting to watch the live drawing for six custom aprons. Curbside baskets and entry into the apron drawing is $30.

The Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St., is changing up its Souper Bowl event this year by removing the shared meal and introducing the “buy a bowl, fill a bowl” initiative, benefitting Just Food. Set up a time to stop by the center between Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. to shop custom bowls, designed by local artists. Proceeds from custom ceramics starting at $10 will go to arts center programming. Any non-perishable food donations will go to Just Food and knock a few bucks off the decorative bowls.

Sunday, Feb. 7

10 – 11 a.m. The KC Black History Project is presenting a forum over Zoom Sunday morning, courtesy of All Souls KC. The online session will feature Black Archives of Mid-America director Carmaletta Williams, poet Glenn North, and Kansas City Public Library historian Jeremy Drouin digging into themes from this year’s KC Black History book and more. Registration for the forum is free.

11 a.m. The folks at International Tap House, 403 E. 18th St., are superstitious. Last year’s Super Bowl watch party went so well, the Crossroads bar and its brews from around the world will host a watch party once again. ITap is offering $3.75 local draughts, gold and red shots, Mahomes Mules and plenty of air-high fives. Be sure to get there early, as seating is limited. Reservations will not be accepted.

11 a.m. – 4 p.m. They say big-time players step up in big-time games. That’s exactly what Joe’s Kansas City has planned for the Super Bowl, as the barbecue staple announced this week it has plans to break tradition and remain open on Sunday. Call ahead, though, chances are there will be plenty of ‘Z Man’ orders for the big game and a line out the door.

5:30 p.m. Missie B’s, 805 W. 39th St., Super Bowl Watch Party should be a blast. There’ll be 22 televisions tuned in to the game, plus a patio projector. Expect $10 buckets of beer, plus shot specials during the game. Super Bowl squares will benefit 15 & The Mahomies. There will also be a 50/50 raffle for anyone who is feeling lucky. Reservations are recommended.
