Weekend Possibilities | Super Bowl Parties, Adam Sandler and Valentine’s Dates

The Super Bowl dominates happenings this weekend in Kansas City, but there’s a full slate of fun on tap before settling in for the big game.

As for gameday, it’s watch parties galore.

Friday, Feb. 10

5 – 8 p.m. Friday night calls for Family Fun Night at Powell Community Center, 6200 Martway St. The free evening of fun and games at the Mission, Kansas, community center will include an open indoor pool and playground, arts and crafts and more. Registration is not required.

7:30 p.m. It’s the opening night of “Fairview” at KC Melting Pot Theatre at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Central St. Reserve your seat for the first look at the production by Jackie Sibblies Drury that tells the story of the Frasier family and a chaotic birthday dinner. General admission tickets are $27.50. Senior tickets are $23.

Saturday, Feb. 11

11 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Strawberry Swing Indie Craft Fair and J. Rieger & Co. are joining forces for A Valentine’s Pop-Up at the East Bottoms distillery, 2700 Guinnotte Ave. Stop by to shop at the local makers’ booths for that special someone or bring that special someone along to enjoy Rieger cocktails and bites well before reservations are booked up.

2 – 4 p.m. Six awards are up for grabs at this weekend’s Wings & Chili Cook-Off hosted by The Big Rip Brewing Co., 216 E. 9^th Ave. Registration to compete at the North Kansas City brewery has closed, but taking part as a judge is free. With the purchase of a beverage, attendees can vote on the best wings and chili, helping to decide the “Customers Choice” champion. Big Rip is also rolling out a to-go special ahead of Sunday’s big game.

6 – 10 p.m. Get a jump on Valentine’s Day with a special Couples Skate Saturday night at the Crown Center Ice Terrace, 2425 Grand Blvd. Mix 93.3 will be there registering couples to win a romantic night out prize package, which includes dinner and tickets to an upcoming concert. Adult skating tickets are $8. Ice skate rentals are $5.

7:30 p.m. Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, actor, writer and producer Adam Sandler is bringing his comedic and musical talents to the T-Mobile Center, 1407 Grand Blvd., Saturday evening. Adam Sandler Live tickets are available starting at $34.50, plus taxes and fees. A surprise special guest is on the bill. The performance is recommended for those 16 and older.

Sunday, Feb. 12

10 a.m. Without a doubt the largest Super Bowl watch party in town, the Red Kingdom Block Party in and around KC Live!, 1330 Grand Blvd., is reserved for those 18 and older and is shaping up to be quite the celebration of the Kansas City Chiefs. Organizers have plans for multiple LED screens and stages, live bands through kickoff, giveaways, contests, spirit squads, drumlines and, of course, plenty to eat and drink. Tickets are $20.

4:30 p.m. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have a chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy for the second time in four years Sunday night and North Kansas City’s Screenland Armour, 408 Armour Road, is putting the biggest game of the year on the big screen. Seating is first come, first served, so be prepared to arrive early. There is no outside drink or food allowed.

5:30 – 10 p.m. If you want to get out to watch Super Bowl LVII in a family-friendly setting, The Big Game Watch Party at Chicken N Pickle, 1761 Burlington St., should supply quite the atmosphere. Plenty of televisions and seating, a full food menu, plus games and pickleball courts will keep Chiefs fans comfortable and entertained up to and through kickoff. The watch party is free.

6 p.m. South of downtown Kansas City, Gael’s Public House, 5424 Troost Ave., can’t wait until halftime. Gael’s has organized a Super Bowl Halftime Watch Party, where all eyes will be on Rihanna, as the Grammy Award-winning superstar will take the stage in her first live appearance since 2018. Expect all 26 televisions tuned in and the volume up loud (especially) for halftime. Shots of Don Julio Tequila are half price.
