Weekend Possibilities | Samantha Fish Returns to Knuckleheads, Pumpkin Spice Party and Pork Smoking Class

It’s time to get your live music and outdoor events in before it gets cold. Just be sure to wear a mask, which will also keep your face warm.

Friday, Oct. 9

11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Oktoberfest at the Iron District, 1599 Iron St., in North Kansas City is a go. Celebrate the season in the shipping container bar, restaurant and boutique community with featured menu items, a photo booth and live music from The Happy Wanderers and The Ho Yams.

6 – 8 p.m. Kansas City native Samantha Fish is returning to her hometown for a pair of shows at Knuckleheads Saloon, 2715 Rochester Ave. An award-winning blues artist, Fish was named the 2020 Artist of the Year in Making a Scene’s 2020 Independent Blues Awards. In-person tickets are still available for Friday night’s show. But both the Thursday and Friday night shows will be available via ticketed livestream for anyone interested in watching from the couch. Tickets start at $35.

8 p.m. There’s more local music on the docket Friday night on Kansas City PBS. Tune in at 8 p.m. for the special television premiere of Greenline Grows KC, a 30-minute highlight reel of the Aug. 28 livestream concert featuring acts like Radkey, CUEE, The Greeting Committee, and Krystle Warren, among others. The night of music will raise money for the Greenline Initiative, an organization that aims to build Black generational wealth, political influence and community stability in urban cores.

Saturday, Oct. 10

10 a.m. Now that we’re in the thick of tailgating season (even if it’s from home), it might be time to step up those barbecuing skills. Luckily, The Culinary Center of Kansas City, 7920 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park, is here to help. Join instructor Bruce Campbell Saturday morning for High On The Hog! How To Smoke Pork. The class will cover how to select, trim and prepare a variety of pork ribs, plus how to cook a pork butt. The session includes all that, plus how to maintain a fire, what wood to pick and other tips and tricks to use along the way. Registration is $60.

Noon – 6 p.m. It gets the people going. That’s right, the Pumpkin Spice Party at KC Wine Co.,13875 S. Gardner Road in Olathe, is back and rolling all weekend long. Stop by for complementary pumpkin spice donuts to be paired with a KC Wine Co. slush or pour. There’s no admission required. You must be 21 or older to attend.

4 – 9 p.m. The 18th & Vine District will host Evolution of Black Hair and Culture on Saturday evening. The street festival will put Black excellence on full display in a celebration of creativity, fashion, art and more. Tickets are $15.

Sunday, Oct. 11

8 – 10 a.m. Wake up where the Missouri and Kansas Rivers meet with RISE by Quixotic and Mass MVMNT at Lewis & Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point, 1 River City Drive in Kansas City, Kansas. The outdoor and socially distant event will feature guided meditation, live music, yoga and dance to start Sunday morning. Tickets are $30 and will partially benefit Friends of Kaw Point Park.

3 – 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon means live music in the bierhalle at KC Bier Co., 310 W. 79th St. Enjoy Live Polka and Drinking Songs with Bram Wijnands along with Bavarian pretzels, sausages, cheeses, plus plenty of beer. Be sure to try the brewery’s new non-dry-hopped Farmhaus, which just dropped this week.

5 – 6:30 p.m. The Lenexa Art Council is inviting families to wrap the weekend with a bit of live music in the park. The Stolen Winnebagos will be on stage at Sar Ko Par Trails Park, 14915 87 St., in the next installment of Lenexa’s outdoor concert series. Be sure to bring blankets, chairs and a picnic to chill out while the band plays anything from classic rock to hip hop  in the park’s Grand Pavilion. The concert is free.
