Weekend Possibilities | Pride Celebrations, New 39th Street Spot and Laser Lizzo

Live music from up and coming rappers and local singer-songwriters, along with Our House KC’s grand opening and a pair of Pride Month celebrations make for a full weekend.

Friday, June 4

7 a.m. – 10 p.m. Friday marks the grand opening for Our House KC, a new restaurant at 1815 W. 39th St. serving a full breakfast and lunch menu, plus drinks, desserts and cafe items. Restaurant industry veterans Joe and Maggie Zahner’s new concept promises good beats, great eats and smoked meats. Sounds like they’ll fit in just fine on 39th Street.

5 p.m. The Linden Square Food. Art. Drink. Festival is coming back to downtown Gladstone, Missouri, 7010 N. Holmes St. The city’s premiere art festival will feature artists showing and selling their work, drinks, food trucks and two nights of live music. Friday night’s set of tunes includes music from Payton Westfall and Cherry Bomb starting at 6 p.m. Be sure to check online for a full schedule of events. The festival is free to attend.

8:30 p.m. Theatre in the Park returns to Shawnee Mission Park, 7710 Renner Road, this weekend with an on-stage production of “Mamma Mia!” Grab a good seat starting at 7 p.m. and settle in for director Mark Swezey and his cast’s rendition of ABBA’s hits, which tell the story of a young woman’s search for her birth father. Tickets start at $20.

Saturday, June 5

9 – 11 a.m. Kenagy Lake, 7834 Raytown Road, will host this weekend’s 44th Annual Fishing Derby in conjunction with Raytown Parks and Recreation and the Raytown Three Trails Kiwanis Club. The free fishing derby is open to Raytown residents of all ages. Registration starts at 8 a.m. the morning of the event.

9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Calling all bookworms. Make plans to add to the summer reading list this weekend with the City Market Book Sale. Friends of the Kansas City Public Library are back with their gently used book sale in the City Market, 25 E. 3rd St., and will be set up on the east side of the market, just in front of the Arabia Steamboat Museum.

11 a.m. – 10 p.m. A member of the Kansas City Pride Community Alliance (KCPCA), Servaes Brewing Co., 10921 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas, has big plans for Pride Month. Saturday’s event will feature a Love is Love fruited sour release and food trucks. A portion of proceeds will benefit KCPCA. Servaes will also be collecting items for I Support The Girls KC.

9 p.m. Lizzo is coming to Union Station — sort of. Laser Lizzo will make its debut at the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium Saturday night inside Union Station, 30 W. Pershing Road. The laser show and concert screening will include many of the Grammy Award-winning artist’s hits in an 11-song setlist. Tickets are $8.

Sunday, June 6

9 a.m. Blip Roasters’ Hello Pie Pop-Up should draw an early morning crowd to the motorcycle-centric coffee shop in the West Bottoms, 1301 Woodswether Road. Hello Pie’s Bourbon Pecan Crumble and Mixed Summer Berry Basil slices not only sound delicious, but should sell out in a snap. Head to Blip’s website to order a full pie ahead of time.

1 – 11 p.m. The Velvet Freeze Daiquiris, in the heart of the 18th and Vine District, 1827 Vine St., will welcome Young M.A to the historic jazz neighborhood Sunday. The New York City rapper, whose music has landed in the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 and racked up millions of views on YouTube, will play a set outdoors for all ages. Tickets start at $30. VIP packages are available starting at $60.

4 – 6 p.m. There’s a Pride Party! Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kansas. Make the day trip to South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St., for a community picnic with free rainbow sherbet, activities for families, plus local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups with information on how to become more involved. The event is free to attend.
