Weekend Possibilities | Mother’s Day, SERV, Space Camper

Celebrate Mother’s Day with brunch, booze or an afternoon at the ballet. While mothers certainly deserve more than one day, other weekend options include pickleball at Overland Park’s SERV and the Water Lantern Festival.

Friday, May 12

11 a.m. – 10 p.m. SERV, 9051 Metcalf Ave., a new pickleball and restaurant complex in Overland Park, is open for business. The space has six different eateries, a bar, space for lawn games and eight pickleball courts. Parties can choose between outdoor cabanas or indoor private rooms. Pickleball court reservations are $20 during non-primetime hours and $40 when it gets busy.

6 p.m. Boulevard Brewing Co., 2501 Southwest Blvd., is inviting IPA lovers to the brewery for Guided Tasting: Space Camper Universe, a behind-the-scenes look at how the popular brew is made. The tasting tour will explore the flavors from the four different Space Camper IPAs, including the new Terror from the Deep Double IPA, along with four paired small plates. You must be 21 or older to blast off. Tickets are $25.

Saturday, May 13

10 a.m. – 2 p.m. You can pick up a last-minute Mother’s Day gift at Saturday’s Union Cemetery Spring Bazaar, 227 E. 28^th Terr. The historic cemetery will welcome more than 25 local vendors, offer food trucks for the hungry and live music to celebrate spring just south of Crown Center. The bazaar is free to attend.

11 – 10 p.m. Servaes Brewing Co., 10921 Johnson Drive, is raising a glass to moms Saturday with Mother’s Day Mimosa Flights. Multiple mimosa flavors are on the brewery’s menu for the occasion and local makers Legacy Loop Crochet and Elston Valley Candle will be in the house from 1 – 4 p.m. for any pop-up shoppers. Organizers will donate $2 from every full pour throughout the day to KC Mothers in Charge, a local nonprofit dedicated to reducing violent crime. There is no cover.

5:30 – 9:30 p.m. The 2023 Water Lantern Festival will light up Frank A. Theis Park, Oak and 47^th streets, Saturday night. The annual celebration will have food trucks and local vendors on site, plus a lantern-making station and a storytelling and meditation opportunity ahead of the launch. Lanterns are lit and launched between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $26.98 in advance and $40 at the gate. Make sure to bring cash for food trucks and vendors, a lawn chair or blanket and bug spray.

9 p.m. West Bottoms bar 9^th & State, 1717 W. 9^th St., is dedicating the dance floor to fans of anime Saturday night. AniMay Dance Night with DJ DarkSkies in the booth will have themed cocktails and a cosplay costume contest. Come dressed up for the chance to win free tickets to the three-day Naka-Kon anime convention. You must be 21 to attend. There is no cover fee.

Sunday, May 14

11 a.m. – 1 p.m. There’s nothing like cooking with your mom. That’s the plan for Mother’s Day Brunch Workshop at Citrus Table, 2020 W. Baltimore Ave. Attendees will learn how to assemble an all-time charcuterie board while enjoying a coffee flight. Tickets include ingredients and a board to take home, food and drinks, a goodie bag and more. Tickets are $90. Use the promo code “MOM” for a 20% discount.

11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Reservations are strongly encouraged, but not required for Lidia’s, 101 W. 22^nd St., Mother’s Day Brunch 2023. Award-winning television host, author and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich and executive chef Cody Hogan have crafted a special menu for the day that costs $52 for adults, not including gratuity, and $16 for kids under 12. Be sure to check out the menu online in advance.

2 p.m. There’s a Mother’s Day matinee performance of Bliss Point from Kansas City Ballet Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, 1601 Broadway Blvd. Bliss Point will bring Mark Morris’ “Sandpaper” and Alexander Ekman’s “Cacti” contemporary ballets to the stage for a pair of humorous, light-hearted performances perfect for an afternoon out with your mom. Tickets are available starting at $42.50, plus tax and fees.

5 p.m. If sunshine and soccer sound like a win-win on Mother’s Day, the KC Current will take on San Diego Wave FC at Children’s Mercy Park, 1 Sporting Way, Sunday night. The Current is looking to bounce back coming off consecutive losses. San Diego currently sits in fifth place. Tickets are available starting at $25, plus tax and fees.
