Weekend Possibilities | KC Local Holiday Market, Pumpkin Smash and Apocalypse Meow

Smash your pumpkins and go ice skating. It’s the first weekend of November.

Friday, Nov. 4

6 – 9 a.m. Sharpen those skates, The Crown Center Ice Terrace, 2425 Grand Blvd., opens for its 50th season this weekend and the fun starts with an early morning free session with skate rental. There will be complimentary coffee, hot chocolate and pastries, a live radio broadcast from Mix 93.3 and some seriously smooth ice.

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Sewing Labs’ Open Stitch at Don Bosco Community Center, 526 Campbell St., is open to anyone in the middle of a project or looking for inspiration. Whether you’re sewing, stitching, quilting or knitting, Open Stitch provides the space to create alongside fellow sewing enthusiasts, with plenty of materials and sewing machines available to use. It’s free.

Saturday, Nov. 5

9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Get an early jump on the holiday shopping list at this weekend’s KC Local Holiday Market at Lenexa Thompson Barn, 11184 Lackman Road. The space will host 57 local maker booths, the chance to take home raffle prizes, pizza, coffee, baked goods, snacks and an early visit from Santa Claus himself.

1 – 5 p.m. Have a few funky jack-o-lanterns on your hands? Bring them to Pumpkin Smash 2022 at Urbavore Urban Farm, 5500 Bennington Ave., to dispose of old pumpkins in an environmentally friendly and fun fashion. There will be music from DJ Dan Cool, beer from Transport Brewery and tools provided for smashing. The Pumpkin Smash is free.

6 – 10 p.m. Live professional wrestling is coming to the Kansas City, Kansas, National Guard Armory, 100 S. 20th St. Central States Wrestling’s Vendetta will feature six matches, plus a fatal four-way bout to crown a new Central States Champion. Tickets start at $20. Discounted military tickets are available online.

6 p.m. – 1 a.m. Apocalypse Meow 15 is Saturday at recordBar, 1520 Grand Blvd., and the lineup is packed with local talent. The benefit show for Abby’s Fund and Midwest Music Foundation has Eddie Moore, Mellowphobia, The Electric Lungs, Pure XTC and Nathan Corsi and My Atomic Daydream on the bill. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

7 – 9 p.m. Master distillers, brand managers, industry pros and a ton of tasting opportunities will highlight the KC Whiskey Expo Saturday at Harrah’s Kansas City, 1 Riverboat Drive in North Kansas City. More than 40 participating distillers, both local and national, will be on hand to answer questions, provide industry knowledge and more. Other spirits will be available if whiskey isn’t your thing. Tickets are $75.

Sunday, Nov. 6

11 a.m. Immersive King Tut at Lighthouse Artspace Kansas City, 8690 Dixson Ave., is open and welcoming time travelers Sunday afternoon. The interactive and immersive experience takes visitors into ancient Egypt and the Egyptian afterlife, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. Staggered entry times are at 11 a.m., Noon and 1 p.m. Tickets are $35. 

2 p.m. Author and historian Phil Dixon will lead the Missouri Valley Sundays discussion at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. This week’s topic, John “Buck” O’Neil as I Knew Him: A Historian’s Perspective, will cover the life and legacy of O’Neil with insights detailed in Dixon’s recent book on Buck, “John ‘Buck’ O’Neil: The Rookie, His Words, His Voice.” The event is free to attend.

2 p.m. Spooky season isn’t over at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City. Get tickets to The Addams Family at The Lewis & Shirley White Theatre at The J, 5801 W. 115th St., before it’s too late. Seats for the PG production of the comical musical start at $17.
