Weekend Possibilities | Inauguration Fashion, Snow Creek and a Personal Movie Theater Experience

From virtual jewelry-making classes for the kiddos to an afternoon skiing at Snow Creek, there’s plenty to pass the time until Sunday’s 2:05 p.m. kickoff between the Chiefs and Browns at Arrowhead Stadium.

Friday, Jan. 15

Legoland Discovery Center and Sea Life Kansas City, 2475 Grand Blvd., are thanking grocery store workers by offering complimentary admission through Jan. 22. The unsung frontline workers of the pandemic can explore exhibits like Sea Life’s touchpool, go face to face with sea turtles and watch live feedings at Kansas City’s only aquarium, all for free. Just next door, take a stroll through the Lego version of Kansas City, including a miniature Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium. Be sure to check online for attraction hours.

4 – 10 p.m. If you’re itching for a rush of adrenaline, pick up lift tickets for a day at Snow Creek in Weston, Missouri, 1 Snow Creek Drive. Just 40 minutes from downtown Kansas City, Snow Creek’s 60 snowmaking machines provide the powder even on sunny days for Platte County’s 300-foot vertical drop. Twelve trails and two terrain parks provide options for skiers and snowboarders of any skill level. Don’t feel like falling? Hop on a tube for some serious sledding. Be sure to check online as packages and equipment prices vary.

7 p.m. There’s a Led Zeppelin tribute show Friday night at Knuckleheads Saloon, 2715 Rochester Ave. Get a ticket to watch tribute group Led Zep pick up the same gear Zeppelin played in the 1970s and keep an ear out for deep cuts, in addition to many of the band’s all-time hits. The event is for those 21 and older. Tickets are $10.

Saturday, Jan. 16

12:30 – 1:30 p.m. ScrapsKC is teaching kids how to make recycled jewelry from home this weekend. Saturday afternoon’s lesson will go over how to use jewelry-making tools, what it takes to repurpose leftover materials and create lasting pieces, like a pair of earrings, a bracelet and necklace. Be sure to sign up in time to swing by ScrapsKC to pick up materials. Tickets are $10.

If there’s still money in your KC Restaurant Week budget, dip back in and check out the participating list of minority- or women-owned establishments. The new filtering feature lists 14 spots around town run by minority owners and women, ranging from BB’s Lawnside Bar-B-Que to Summit Plaza. Remember, several locations are offering special takeout menus during the pandemic. KC Restaurant Week wraps up Sunday.

On Monday, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn into office on Inauguration Day, making this weekend the perfect time to check out Kansas City Museum’s Pomp and Ceremony: Inaugurations, First Families and Beyond. The exhibit features items worn by our local, state and national leaders to inaugurations, balls, parties and more. Kansas City Museum is closed to in-person visitors, but a thorough virtual tour is available on the museum’s Facebook page.

Imagine an entire movie theater to yourself and a few friends. AMC is making their auditoriums available for personal movie screenings during the pandemic. Get everyone to pitch in to pay for fan favorite films for $99 plus tax or new releases for $149 plus tax. All you have to do is choose a local AMC theater, pick a movie and show up. No more loud popcorn crunchers!

Sunday, Jan. 17

1 – 3 p.m. There’s a free outdoor adventure awaiting children ages 4-6 Sunday afternoon at Hidden Valley Girl Scout CAMP, 3420 Bob Billings Pkwy. in Lawrence. Sign your kiddo up for Nature Detective Winter Outings hike into Hidden Valley. The tour-hour trip through wooded trails will be led by an experienced naturist so kids can record their findings and find fun in nature in creative ways. Numbers are limited and masks are required. Little ones should be accompanied by an adult.

2 p.m. Football fans can check out the Chiefs Watch Party at Border Brewing Co., 406 E. 18th St. Find a spot in the cozy taproom before kickoff and open a tab, because you just might want to try more than one brew. From the Strawberry Blonde Ale to the Philly Sour, with plenty of IPAs in between, there’s something for every Chiefs fan.
