Weekend Possibilities | First Friday, Wine and Drake

Spring-like temperatures are expected just in time for First Friday fun in the Crossroads. As for the rest of the weekend, a traditional Filipino breakfast, Uncorked: KC Wine Fest and Drake are all options.

Friday, March 1

5 – 8 p.m. Without Words – Joy From an Asian Perspective opens Friday evening in The Opie Gallery, 2012 Baltimore Ave. The Kansas City Art Institute AAPI Association exhibition will feature work from seven artists across different mediums and runs through the end of the month. The First Friday opening is free to the public.

6 & 7:30 p.m. UMKC Conservatory musicians and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 4525 Oak St., will team up Friday for Sight X Sound: An Art & Music Series in Noguchi Court. The concert series’ first performance of the season, titled “Monet and his Modern Contemporaries,” will explore the cultural and emotional intersection of visual art and music. Tickets are $6 for the public and $3 for members.

7 p.m. If you are out enjoying the Crossroads to start the weekend, check out Free First Friday Comedy at The Bird Comedy Theater, 103 W. 19^th St. Local talent will take the stage for a night of laughs. The Bird’s bar has beer, wine, soft drinks, popcorn and candy. Donations are appreciated.

Saturday, March 2

9 a.m. – Noon Rise and shine, the Pinoy Breakfast at the Filipino Cultural Center, 9810 W. 79^th St., looks tasty. The traditional fare combo plate includes garlic fried rice, an egg, tocino and longanisa for $12. A second combo plate includes all this, plus danggit, a dried fish, for $15. All plates come with a side of fruit and veggies, plus coffee.

10 – 11:30 a.m. Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 N.W. Park Road, offers a morning in the great outdoors Saturday for Totally Turtles. The all-ages educational event led by the Missouri Department of Conservation staff will provide insight into local turtle habitats, life cycles and survival skills. Attendees will have the chance to get up close with 10 species of Missouri turtles, including an eastern snapping turtle. Registration is free.

1 – 9 p.m. Uncorked: KC Wine Fest returns to Union Station, 30 W. Pershing Road. Split into two sessions, Uncorked brings more than 100 wines and champagnes to Kansas City for a day of tastings from around the world. Look for food trucks outside of Union Station. General session tickets are $60. A $75 early entry ticket grants access to another hour of tasting, plus special pours from select wineries. You must be 21.

2 – 4 p.m. Creatives are coming together at the Westport Flea Market, 817 Westport Road, for Creature Crafternoon: Forest Spirit Terrarium. The class by OmniFeral will provide a glass bowl, figurines, stones and moss for participants to create a miniature ecosystem to take home. Reserve your spot for $26. Space is limited.

Sunday, March 3

11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Mimosa Madness is back for March only at The Vineyard at J. Creek, 16905 Jowler Creek Road. Make it out for a flight of orange, grapefruit, cranberry and mango mimosas, plus live music from Lindsay Blacksher. The Taco-Ish food truck will be on location serving brunch. There is no cover.

7 p.m. World-renowned dance company The StepCrew will perform at Yardley Hall at Midwest Trust Center, 12345 College Blvd., Sunday night. The group combines Irish, Tap and Ottawa Valley percussive dance styles, resulting in a performance with a traditional feel and modern twist. Tickets are available for $25.

8 p.m. The Drake with J. Cole: It’s All A Blur Tour stops in Kansas City this weekend for a pair of shows at T-Mobile Center, 1407 Grand Blvd. The Toronto rapper and second-most streamed artist of all time returns to town following his 2023 release, “For All the Dogs.” Fans in search of tickets at this point will probably pay a pretty penny. Ticket resale prices hover around $200.
