Weekend Possibilities | Easter Eggs, Making Movies and Orchids

Break out the baskets, Easter is this weekend and there are egg hunts for everyone.

For family-friendly festivities, check out Easter Celebration at Chicken N Pickle or Downtown Overland Park’s Hop in the DOP. You can also say hello to spring with Orchid Delirium at Powell Gardens or Yoga in the Park.

Friday, March 29

9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Orchid Delirium and Daffodil Days highlight the spring growing season at Powell Gardens, 1609 N.W. U.S. Highway 50. Garden visitors will get an early glimpse at more than 100,000 daffodil blooms emerging on the botanical gardens’ east lawn. Indoors, Orchid Delirium showcases the delicate flowers in a 2,000-piece collection, curated by Powell gardeners. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $8 for children (5-12).

Noon – Midnight If you love “The Office,” pay a visit to the Assistant to the Regional Pop Up Bar this weekend at Vignettes Bar, 2376 Armour Road. The immersive pop-up experience will take patrons into the Dunder Mifflin workplace, where themed drinks like “Kevin’s Famous Chili Old Fashioned” and a selection from “Meredith’s Liquor Drawer” are on the menu. Reservations are required. It’s $5 per person.

7 – 9 p.m. Amateur artists will have a high time during a Paint & Puff Art Class at Happy Trees Painting, 1219 Union Ave., in the West Bottoms. The bring-your-own-bud (and smoking apparatus) art session will lead guests in a step-by-step painting tutorial to create a psychedelic desert scene. You must be 21 or older to attend. Tickets are $50.

Saturday, March 30

10 a.m. – Noon Downtown Overland Park’s annual Hop in DOP at The Clock Tower Plaza, 7935 Santa Fe Drive, will have kid-friendly games, music and a bunny meet and greet as part of the early Easter celebration. Bring a basket and search for colorful egg posters in the windows of area businesses, where treats await. Hop in DOP is free to attend.

11 a.m. – 2 p.m. A family-friendly Easter Celebration is on the books Saturday at Chicken N Pickle, 1761 Burlington St., in North Kansas City. After brunch, kids can snap pics and play pickleball with the Easter Bunny, have their faces painted and hunt for eggs. There are designated times for each age group’s hunt, so be sure to check out more information online in advance. The celebration is free.

Noon – 6 p.m. Stroud’s, 8301 W. 135^th St., in Overland Park is offering an Easter Family Meal to-go, if you’re hosting family this weekend. Available hot or cold, the package includes roasted turkey, honey ham, gravies, mashed potatoes, green beans, carrots, fruit salad and cinnamon rolls. The meal serves five people, with more sides available for purchase. To-go meals include re-heating instructions. The meal is $120.

3 – 11 p.m. Spring Cider Fest is Saturday at Cinder Block Brewery, 1802 Clay St. The North Kansas City brewery will roll out six house-made ciders to celebrate, available by the glass or in flights. Be sure to vote for your favorites for the chance to win a few cases to take home. Local musicians The Swallowtails will be on stage from 3-6 p.m. Expect food truck treats from Junkyard Dog if you get hungry. The event is family-friendly and will have a bird house building and painting station set up for the kids. Cider Fest is free.

10 p.m. Celebrate Making Movies’ Quinceañera Saturday night at The Ship, 1221 Union Ave. The Kansas City Latino alt-rockers plan to play from their entire discography for the 15-year birthday bash. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. You must be 21 or older to attend. Doors open at 9 p.m.

Sunday, March 31

2 – 3 p.m. For more than a decade, Yoga in the Park on the lawn at Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 4525 Oak St., has brought community members together for practice among the shuttlecocks. The first session of the spring is Sunday. Be sure to bring your own mat, towel or blanket, sunscreen and water. Jesse Davis will lead the class designed for all abilities. Yoga in the Park is free.

3 p.m. There’s an Easter Egg Hunt for Grown Ups Sunday at Transport Brewery Shawnee, 11113 Johnson Drive. Teams of two will start things off with a welcome beer or cider, before setting off around Downtown Shawnee in search of eggs. Whoever brings back all the eggs the fastest will get brewery gift cards. Everyone gets a t-shirt and another brew upon completing the hunt. It’s all included for $50 per team. You must be 21 to play along.
