Weekend Possibilities | Bowie Fest, Chiefs vs. Jags and Lunar New Year at Made Mobb

The biggest David Bowie tribute shows of the year are here. The Band That Fell to Earth KC will take the recordBar stage this weekend, with a part of proceeds going to charity.

Friday, Jan. 20 

4 – 11 p.m. As You Wish: A Pop-Up of Unusual Size is open and ready for business in Shawnee, 4601 Shawnee Drive. Paying tribute to the all-time classic “The Princess Bride,” the pop-up experience will feature movie-themed treats like “The Rodent of Unusual Size” or a “Bottle of Wits.” You must be 21 or older to attend. Reservations are $5 per person. 

7:30 p.m. Thirteen Kansas City musicians will take the stage at recordBar, 1520 Grand Blvd., for back-to-back David Bowie tribute shows Friday and Saturday. The Band That Fell to Earth KC and special guests have plans for different sets each night, with a part of the proceeds going to a local nonprofit. VIP doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Livestream tickets are $5. 

8 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. Up-Down Kansas City’s, 101 Southwest Blvd., Video Killed the Radio Star weekend is celebrating the first 20 years of music videos this weekend. The arcade bar will play all the classics on Friday and Saturday, giving patrons the chance to vote on the best music video of the era. There is no cover. 

Saturday, Jan. 21 

10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Café Ca Phe, Smoke N Soul and Made Mobb are coming together at the streetwear brand headquarters, 221 Southwest Blvd., to ring in the Lunar New Year. Saturday’s collaborative celebration will have local AAPI vendors, music, food, dragon dances, face painting and exclusive merch drops all day. The Lunar New Year party is free to attend. 

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Day In the Life: Basic Training is a free learning experience scheduled for Saturday afternoon from the Living History Volunteer Corps and National World War I Museum and Memorial, 2 Memorial Drive. Attendees will get a closer look at an average day in the life and duties of WWI-era soldiers who went through basic training. Members of the volunteer corps will be on hand to answer questions and show guests artifacts from The Great War up close. No reservation is needed. 

3 p.m. The Kansas City Chiefs kick off this weekend’s slate of NFL Divisional Round playoff games with a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Arrowhead Stadium. Over in the West Bottoms, The Ship, 1221 Union Ave., has plans for a Watch Party. Join the fun for the game projected on a 120-inch screen, drinks, food and hopefully plenty of Chiefs touchdowns. Best of all, commercials will be muted during breaks in the action and replaced with a special sports soundtrack. 

Sunday, Jan. 22 

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sunday wraps up three days of the National Fishing Expo at the KCI Expo Center, 11730 N. Ambassador Drive. Fishing tackle and gear exhibitors from across the country and Canada will be on hand, as well as guides and wildlife experts to help with planning your next outdoor excursion. Be sure to check the full schedule for daily seminars from pro bass, walleye, crappie and catfish anglers. Single-day tickets are $12. Weekend passes are available for $25. 

2 p.m. – 6 p.m. Spend Sunday afternoon inside the warm Warwick Theater, 3927 Main St., and enjoy a performance of “The Iceman Cometh.” Named “The Best American Play” by the New York Drama Critic’s Circle, the challenging production tells the tale of New York bar patrons who discover the secrets of salesman and drinking buddy Theodore Hickman. Tickets start at $39. 

2:30 – 5:30 p.m. Whether you are looking to add to the collection or offload propagations, Sunday’s Plant Swap at The Space 9915 in Independence, 9915 E. U.S. 40, will bring together those with – or without – a green thumb to exchange foliage. Tickets are $5. Refreshments are provided.
