Weekend Possibilities | Beer Fest at Bar K, iFly’s Leap Year Deal, and a Fabulously Funny Comedy Festival

The weekend of February 29th only comes every so often. Between a lesson in beekeeping, Bar K’s beer festival and Baby Shark Live, it should be a good one. 

Friday, Feb. 28

4 – 8 p.m. KC Wine Co. Vineyard and Winery, 13875 S. Gardner Road, Olathe, Kansas, is providing a little taste of summertime with this weekend’s Pineapple Cider Release Party. Head to KC Wine Co. all weekend to try samples of the brand-new hard cider or a full draw. There also will be four-packs to take home and share. If cider isn’t your thing, KC Wine Co. is pairing wines with your favorite Girl Scout cookies Saturday and Sunday 12 – 6 p.m. 

7:30 – 11:30 p.m. Boots & Pearls, Wine & Whiskey: A Tasting for Alphapointe is coming to the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas, for a night of fun for a good cause. Guests will be treated to live art by renowned blind painter John Bramblitt, live music from local artist Noe Palma and select wine and and whiskey pours. Proceeds benefit people who are blind and visually impaired, being served through Alphapointe’s programs. General admission tickets are $100. VIP tickets are $225. 

8 p.m. Consider clearing Friday night plans for the Fabulously Funny Comedy Festival at Municipal Auditorium, 301 W. 13th St. Festival headliner Mike Epps will lead the evening of laughs featuring veteran comedians Sammore, Gary Owen and Lavell Crawford, coming off his hilarious performance in Netflix original “Dolemite is My Name.” Tickets start at $52.

Saturday, Feb. 29

10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The Arts and Recreation Foundation of Overland Park is inviting anyone to learn about the art of beekeeping with Intro to Bees and Beekeeping at Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, 8909 W. 179th St. An expert from Kansas Bee Co. will be on hand to talk about types of bees, life cycles and how to start beekeeping, plus topics like equipment, time management, honey extraction, pest control and more. Registration and a $3 admission fee is required. 

11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Forecasts call for sunshine on Saturday afternoon, so grab your four-legged friend and head to Bar K Beer Fest 2020, 501 Berkley Parkway. There will be local craft, as well as international pours available to ticket holders, plus unlimited play time for the pup. Both general admission ($25) and VIP ($35) tickets are available. VIP will grant you early entry, first dibs on small batch and special release sampling and first access to free vendor swag. Bar K members will receive a discount. Food is sold separately. 

12 – 7 p.m. If you’re always on the trail of fashion’s latest trend, or just all-around sneaker head, swing by Hypecon Saturday afternoon at Hy-Vee Arena, 1800 Genessee St. HypeBeast KC, a local sneaker and collectible marketplace, is bringing vendors from all over selling sneakers, funkos, collectibles and other limited edition and vintage items from brands like Nike, Jordan, Adidas, Supreme, KAWS and more. Tickets to Hypecon are $10 online and $15 at the door. Vendor spots are sold out, however non-vendors are allowed to bring five pairs of shoes to trade/sell.

7:30 p.m. Saturday marks the last chance to see KC Melting Pot Theatre’s, 3051 Penn Valley Drive, production of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun.” The play tells the story of The Youngers, an African American family from Chicago’s South Side, waiting for a life insurance check that could change everything. Tickets start at $23. 

Sunday, March 1

10 a.m. – 7 p.m. If skydiving has always been a bucket list item, an afternoon at iFLY in Overland Park, 10975 Metcalf Ave., just might be the first step. The indoor skydiving venue is celebrating the Leap Year by inviting anyone born on February 29 for two free flights during the Leap Year Week. If you weren’t lucky enough to be born on Leap Day, iFLY is still offering a 29% discount on up to two additional flights added to a flight package during the week.

3 p.m. The viral “Baby Shark” sensation that swept the globe, garnered more than 5 billion total related video views on YouTube and has recently been adapted to a Nickelodeon television show, is coming to Kansas City. Get the kids fired up for Baby Shark Live at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence, 19100 E Valley View Pkwy. Meet and greet and tickets to the show start at $39.50. Children under the age of 1 are free.
