The days leading up to the Super Bowl were joyous: the air was fresher, people were nicer and the beer was sweeter. And if Sunday is any indication of how this week is going to be, then there’s definitely more happiness (and beer) on the horizon. Boulevard Brewing Co. is slated to release Big Blueberry Ox (ABV 10%), a wild saison ale made in collaboration with The Bruery, this March. 

The beer will be a part of their First Fridays Collection, an experimental collection of beers inspired by Kansas City’s long-standing first friday tradition. Other beers in the First Fridays Collection include Lickable Wallpaper (8.1% ABV, 4 IBU), Your Popsicle Melted (7.4% ABV, 5 IBU) and Hold the Pancakes (13.9% ABV, 13 IBU). 

Big Blueberry Ox is brewed with Belgian and wild yeasts, and then aged for 14 months in an oak foeder. The beer is then conditioned in 80,000 pounds of blueberries. 

Boulevard has a long history with Kansas City’s arts community. Thirty years ago,  Boulevard’s founder John McDonald began sharing kegs with the local arts community at Friday gallery openings.

Crane Brewing Co.’s Champ Stamp is a delicious blond ale (5% ABV) dedicated to Kansas City’s very own Patrick Mahomes. This deceptive brew has a zesty, citrusy scent, and carries notes of wheat and barley on the front end with licorice on the back end.

Crane Brewing Co.’s Crush (6% ABV) is an American sour ale brewed in collaboration with Aubrey Vineyards. This delicious brew has a bright strawberry aroma with notes of raspberry and peach

Crane Brewing Co.’s  If… Then...(8% ABV) is a Scotch style ale with notes of whiskey, dark chocolate and espresso beans.

Torn Label Brewing Co.’s Mansion Brew clocks in at 8.8% ABV. This imperial wheat stout was brewed in collaboration with Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters. This beer is absolutely delicious, and tastes like cold-brewed coffee, chocolate covered cherries and sugar cane. 

This Week

Tuesday, Feb. 4

From 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesday, the Culinary Center of Kansas City, 7920 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park, is hosting an Introduction to Beer and Homebrewing Class. The class will be taught by members of Kansas City Beer Meisters, an organization of Kansas City-based homebrewers. For $55, you get to learn how to make your very own beer. Snacks and beer tastings will also be provided. 

Friday, Feb. 7

Head over to Rochester Brewing and Roasting Co., 2129 Washington St. in Kansas City, this Friday from 7-10 p.m. for a silent auction. For just $10, you get to bid on various items, and all of the proceeds will go to Puente De Amistad, an organization that helps build houses for people in Mexico. 

Saturday, Feb. 8

Dust off your lederhosen, and head over to KC Bier Co., 310 W. 79th St. in Kansas City, this Saturday from 1-6 p.m. for the 6th Annual Beer Festival. A $12 fee gets you a sampling glass and six beer tokens, which are redeemable for six half pours or three full pours. Try up to 20 small-batch German biers and an array of German fare. 

Last but not least, the 2020 KC Brewfest is this Saturday from 1-9 p.m at Union Station. More than 40 breweries will be in attendance and more than 100 beers will be available for your tasting pleasure. This is a rare opportunity to try local, national and international beers under one roof. There will also be food and music. It’s beer, food and music. What’s not to love?
