Now that I’m older, I’ve come to regret the things that never were. Take skateboarding, for example.

Middle school Marco still remembers going to the skatepark and staring through the fence with amazement as skateboarders flew through the sky, defying gravity. It was like synchronized swimming, except with beer, fewer shower caps, and the Ramones blaring in the background. 

I suppose I could take up skateboarding in my 30s. I could shred the gnar, land some bolts or master a bluntslide kickflip out. But at what cost? Utter humiliation from teens? Eating concrete? Serious brain injury? In this economy?

Maybe I’ll stick to skateboard slang.

Fortunately, there’s an opportunity this Thursday to merge your love of beer and riding on wheels. Head over to the Ottawa Bike and Trail  from 6 – 9 p.m. for a 17-20 mile bike ride. The ride ends at Not Lost Brewing — 229 S. Main St., Ottawa, Kansas — for some beers and general hangage! 

Beer Releases

Calibration Brewery — 119 Armour Road, North Kansas City, Missouri — has released Let it Flow, a golden ale clocking in at a crushable 5% ABV. 

City Barrel Brewing Co. — 1740 Holmes St., Kansas City, Missouri — has released Chambourcin Geyser (9% ABV) in bottles and tap. Chambourcin Geyser is a golden sour ale aged for fourteen months in wine barrels. This is a limited-run release, so be sure to grab some before it’s gone!

Alma Mader Brewing — 2635 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri  — has announced the return of Overseas Experience (5.9% ABV, 40 IBU), a New England IPA made with Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, and Taiheke hops.This citrusy explosion of flavor is available for $20 per four-pack. 

Strange Days Brewing — 316 Oak St., Kansas City, Missouri — has released They Seem Nice, a pilsner clocking in at 5.2% ABV (25 IBU). It was brewed with Canadian pilsner malt and a portion of the proceeds from this beer go to Harvesters: the Community Food Network.

Sandhills Brewing — 5612 Johnson Drive, Mission, Kansas — has re-released Junco (6.8% ABV, 51 IBU), a New England IPA made with Magnum, Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado hops. Though this beer is an IPA, it promises a smooth flavor profile.

Rockcreek Brewing Co. — 5880 Beverly Ave. Mission, Kansas — just released Waves of Grain, an American wheat beer (5.6% ABV, 26 IBU) brewed with Comet hops and with a citrusy flavor profile.

Thursday, Oct. 8

Head over to Barley’s Kitchen & Tap this Thursday at 4:30 p.m. as Cinder Block Brewery helps them celebrate their 25th anniversary! There will be prize drawings and a special tapping of Cinder Block’s Barrel-Aged Retribution Rye!

Sunday, Oct. 11

3Halves Brewing Co.’s — 110 E. Kansas St., Liberty, Missouri — is hosting football on Sundays. This Sunday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., enjoy $2 off Civic Duty and Desert Gold during the Chiefs game. Also, enjoy BOGO half off on six-packs and four-packs on Saturday and Sunday.
