Tap List | Heartwarming Beers for the Blistering Cold

If you’re reading this, congratulations. You haven’t turned into a human popsicle. Not yet, anyway.

This week, the Kansas City area is doing its best impression of Stalingrad, with temperatures dropping well below zero. As this is written, the temperature outside is a whopping -6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Brrr.

Given the frigid temperatures, the open question for Kansas City beer enthusiasts is whether the local beer scene is frozen in place. The answer is absolutely not. In fact, this week’s Tap List might warm your heart. 

KC Bier Co. — 310 W. 79th St., Kansas City, Missouri — is releasing a very special beer this week dedicated to the memory of Carol Crawford, the older sister of KC Bier’s founder Steve Holle.

Crawford was a devoted teacher and volunteer for Developing Potential Inc., a holistic nonprofit organization dedicated to helping adults with developmental disabilities. In honor of her memory, KC Bier is releasing Carolator, a Heller Doppelbock clocking in at 7.4% ABV, brewed with 100% pilsner malts. This beer will be available in bottles and on draft on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Developing Potential.

Beer Releases

Alma Mader Brewing — 2635 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri  — has released At the Moment, a triple IPA brewed with Citra, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin hops. This beer packs a flavorful punch at 10.5% ABV.

3Halves Brewing Co. —110 E. Kansas St., Liberty, Missouri — just dropped a Hard Seltzer (5% ABV) made with lactose, passionfruit, vanilla and coconut. Get your fix on tap!

Callsign Brewing —1447 Gentry St., North Kansas City, Missouri — added a new beer to its ranks. Hawk Extra Pale Ale clocks in at 5.1% ABV (52 IBU).

Diametric Brewing Co. — 949 N.E. Columbus St., Lees Summit, Missouri — just dropped Never Been Kissed, a chocolate-cherry mead clocking in at 6.9% ABV, chock full of cherry and chocolate flavor!

Crane Brewing Co. — 6515 Railroad St., Raytown, Missouri — released Thought & Memory, a very special coffee stout (7.5% ABV) made with coffee that was sourced from Mantiqueria de Minas in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Outfield Beer Co. — 10953 Kaw Drive Edwardsville, Kansas — has Clean Hit East Coast IPA on tap (5.7% ABV, 52 IBU), an East Coast IPA loaded with hoppy flavor!

Want to stay warm during the cold snap? Head over to Pathlight Brewing — 11200 W. 75th St., Shawnee, Kansas — and snag some of their Barrel Aged House of Black, an oatmeal stout clocking in at 8% ABV, brewed in a whiskey barrel courtesy of the Kansas City Whiskey Society.

Friday, Feb. 19

Apex Aleworks — 4356 S. Noland Road, Independence, Missouri — is hosting open mic, standup comedy this Friday 7 – 8:30 p.m. There will be a pre-show happy hour, so muster up your courage and your best jokes. Or, just grab a delicious beer from Apex and get your goof on.

Saturday, Feb. 20

Get your Girl Scout Cookie and Beer fix at Crane Brewing Co. — 6515 Railroad St., Raytown, Missouri. Crane has carefully selected six cookies and six of their beers for your boozy pleasure. Pick up your box of goodies in the taproom.

If you want to stock up on cookies and great local food, the Eat Schmidt Food Truck will be at Transport Brewery — 11113 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas — 3 – 8 p.m. this Saturday! The Eat Schmidt Food Truck has sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken fingers and delicious desserts.

Top you Saturday off at Apex Aleworks — 4356 S. Noland Road, Independence, Missouri — for some more live music featuring the Bluebone Brothers 7 – 10 p.m. Preshow happy hour starts at 6 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 21

If you’re looking for a place to get brunch this weekend, then look no further. Border Brewing Co. — 406 E. 18th St., Kansas City, Missouri — is hosting brunch with beermosas and waffles this Sunday from 1 – 4 p.m.

After brunch at Border Brewing, head over to Limitless Brewing — 9765 Widmer Road, Lenexa, Kansas — 3 – 5 p.m. for live music featuring the smooth sounds of Jason Kayne.
