I’ve never been camping. But I enjoy a good s’more, and there are many schools of thought related to s’more construction.

Some prefer to let the marshmallow glide far above the flame, for what feels like an infinite amount of time, until the marshmallow achieves a golden brown hue. Only then is the marshmallow ready for the graham cracker, or so they say.

For me, a charred marshmallow is both more tasty and more exciting. After setting it ablaze, you have t-minus one minute before the marshmallow turns into hot ash. It’s not a marathon, it’s a sprint. But instead of a gold medal, you get gooey marshmallow goodness greeting your taste buds at the finish line. Pure gold. 

Regardless of your approach to s’more construction, one thing is for sure. Nothing quite hits the spot like s’mores and seasonal holiday beer. Transport Brewery, 11113 Johnson Drive in Shawnee, has released Campfire Stories (11% ABV), a Russian imperial stout aged in charred American oak barrels. This beer boasts of spice, oak and cacao. Head over to Transport and snag a pour or a can!

Beer Releases

3Halves Brewing Co.’s, 110 E. Kansas St. in Liberty, released The Way, a double dry-hopped hazy IPA clocking in at 6.3% ABV. This beer was brewed with Galaxy and Mosaic hops and is available in very limited quantities, so head over to 3Halves ASAP!

Wind Shift Brewing, 3421B N.W. Jefferson St. in Blue Springs, released two beers! Comet Tsunami (6.5% ABV) is a New England IPA made with Comet and Cascade hops from Kansas Hop Company. Mike Croburst is a DIPA clocking in at 9% ABV. 

East Forty Brewing, 1201 W. Main St. in Blue Springs, dropped Holiday Pale Ale, a delicious pale ale clocking in at 5.8% ABV. It’s brewed with Cascade, Centennial and Moutere hops from Kansas Hop Company.

In collaboration with the Pink Boots Society, Fields and Ivy Brewery, 706 E. 23rd St. in Lawrence, released a beer in honor of former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Notorious RBG (5.3% ABV, 65 IBU) is a black IPA that boasts of malt and hop flavors. A portion of the sales will be donated to the Ballard Center in Lawrence. 

Not Lost Brewing, 229 S. Main St. in Ottawa, dropped Gingerbread Sour (5.9% ABV, 7 IBU), a delicious gingerbread brew that boasts of ginger snaps, spices and vanilla! 

Lost Evenings Brewing Co., 8625 Hauser Court in Lenexa, is hosting a beer release this week. On Thursday, they are releasing Making Christmas (7% ABV), a gingerbread imperial stout that boasts of ginger, brown sugar and cinnamon.

Thursday, Dec. 10

Cinder Block Brewery, 110 E. 18th Ave. in North Kansas City, is hosting a beer release this week. On Thursday, they’re releasing Black Squirrel, a Russian imperial stout clocking in at 9.5% ABV. Conrad’s Restaurant and Ale House, 210 North State Route 291 in Liberty, is hosting the release party, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Head over to Conrad’s and snag a commemorative glass with your pour! 

Friday, Dec. 11

Head over to Border Brewing Co., 406 E. 18th St. in Kansas City, this Friday at 5 p.m. for a night of ‘80s alternative music! Just like last week, you get to be the DJ! Just download the Rockbot app on your phone, request your favorite ’80s tunes, and watch the votes pour in. 

Get your kettle corn fix this Friday at Pathlight Brewing, 11200 W. 75th St. in Shawnee. From 5 -8 p.m., Papa Scott’s Kettle Corn will be serving up holiday cinnamon roll kettle corn as well as their jalapeño cheddar kettle corn. Pathlight will also be releasing a very special beer, so get your beer fix as well! 

Saturday, Dec. 12

Apex Aleworks, 4356 S. Noland Road in Independence, is hosting live music this Saturday from 7-10 p.m. Kansas City’s own Groove Pilots will be playing live rock and roll and blues. Fans of Stevie Ray Vaughn will be pleased!
