Fairway Creamery (5938 Mission Road, Fairway, Kansas) — a new donut shop and soft serve ice cream concept from chocolatier Christopher Elbow — has opened in the former Pizza 51 West space.

The donuts include a spiced old fashioned, raspberry iced, maple buttercrunch, vanilla bean glazed yeast and toasted coconut. On the ice cream side, you can get a float, shake, sundae (the Fairway to Heaven comes atop a donut and is covered in chocolate sauce and sprinkles) or dipped cone.

Food truck season is officially rolling. The Business of Food Trucks presents the Food Truck Face-Off from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Independence Chamber of Commerce (210 W. Truman Road, Independence, Missouri). Five new food trucks (KC Cajun, Mattie’s Vegan Eats, Nikki G’s SoulQ Bistro, Da Poke Wagon and Caio Bella Ice Creamery & Bakery) will compete to be named the Rookie Food Truck of the Year. Tickets are $35. VIP tickets (admission at 4:30 p.m. and drink samples) are $50.

You could eat all of your meals from a food truck this weekend. The Food Truck Frenzy is from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday in Old Town Lenexa (Santa Fe Trail Drive and Pflumm Road). A dozen food trucks (Twisted Taters, Cheesy Street and Torched Goodness, among them) will be onsite and Jerry’s Bait Shop will be running the beer garden.

Plate Restaurant(701 E. 63rd St.), a modern Italian restaurant, has reopened in Brookside two years after a fire destroyed the original location. The restaurant serves pappardelle with pork shoulder ragout, a Caesar salad with grilled romaine hearts, lamb chops with sage gnocchi and budino (salted caramel custard).

Plate is open daily from 4 to 10 p.m. (happy hour is at the bar from 4 to 6 p.m.). Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Saturday. Fiamma (Italian for “flames,”), a cocktail lounge inside Plate, has a late night menu and opens at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The fifth annual Strawberry Hill Pub Crawl, put on by the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Association, is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. You get to pick your starting bar (Breit’s, 403 Club, Colonial Club, Chicago’s, among them) in the Kansas City, Kansas, neighborhood. Tickets ($30) come with a t-shirt and discounts to restaurants and bars (Slap’s BBQ is giving a rib and a beer to pub crawlers).

The Kansas City PrideFest is Friday through Sunday in Berkley Riverfront Park. There is live music, headlined by Mya on Saturday and Daya on Sunday. Admission is $10 each day. Admission is free between noon and 1 p.m. Sunday. Children under 12 years old get free admission all weekend.

The Ivanhoe Farmers’ Market (3209 Woodland Ave.) celebrates its opening day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The Midtown market in the parking lot of the Harold Thomas Center should have greens and produce.

Strawberries are in the running for the best food of summer. The Strawberry Festival returns to the Vaile Mansion (1500 N. Liberty St., Independence, Missouri) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The free festival includes strawberry-themed dishes, crafts, antiques, live music and classic cars. You can also take a tour of the mansion ($6 for adults, $3 for children).
