Pie, Thai & Other Weekend Possibilities

Curry, pad thai and all the ginger has arrived in Independence, Missouri. Thai Kitchen is now open at 19321 E. U.S. Highway 40, Suite A. The restaurant serves papaya salad, fried rice and Thai iced coffee. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 12 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

The Belvoir Winery & Inn (1325 Odd Fellows Road, Liberty, Missouri) hosts its seventh annual Sip & Shop from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Grab a glass of Belvoir’s wine, eat Mudhole BBQ (its food truck will be on site at 3 p.m.) and see what crafters and apparel makers have to sell.

Vintage cookbooks are a great way to pick up tricks in the kitchen and understand why meat finds it way into salads. Friends With Taste is hosting a vintage cookbook sale from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Johnson County Community College’s Wiley Hospitality and Culinary Academy (12345 College Blvd., Overland Park, Kansas). The cookbook sale is at the same time and place as the regular bake sale held by the cooking school. Two words: pecan pie.

You may not need an excuse to eat pie. In fact, eat pie whenever it’s offered.

The Upper Crust Pie Bakery (7943 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas) will be offering pie flights (three bites of happiness) on Friday night between 5 and 8 p.m. [Be forewarned, they occasionally sell out before 8 p.m.] Snag bites of pie and a glass of bubbly as the bakery in downtown Overland Park also dishes up wine by the glass.

The way to make great pies is to learn from a superior pie baker. Chef Shanita Bryant will lead a pie-baking class ($60) at the Culinary Center of Kansas City (7920 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas), across the street from The Upper Crust Pie Bakery, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Learn how to make pie crust from scratch, make apple and sweet potato pie and leave with a pie of your own.

Brookside Wine & Spirits (600 E. 63rd St.) is hosting a Thanksgiving Wine & Pie Tasting from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Before you head there , pop by Heirloom Bakery & Hearth (401 E. 63rd St.) across the street and get yourself a savory or sweet galette (basically a pie without a top), especially if they’ve got one featuring squash.

Boulevard is holding a Pale Ale Takeover Saturday at the Hi-Dive Lounge (1411 W. 39th St.) from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. as the Kansas City brewer celebrates 29 years of making Pale Ale. So you can expect a whole bunch of Pale Ale cans inside Hi-Dive’s mystery beer vending machine. Repeat: Hi-Dive Lounge has a mystery beer vending machine. Boulevard staff will be at the bar with merch too.

Discover your inner trash talk is Up-Down Kansas City’s (101 Southwest Blvd.) NBA Jam tournament to benefit Noah’s Bandage Project, a a charity that raises money for child medical patients in need of bandaging. Assemble your best team of two virtual basketball players (it’s $10 a person). If you fail to win, you still get 40 tokens with your entry, so you can be a Skee-Ball champion instead. Check-in is at 1:30 p.m. and the tournament starts at 2 p.m.

If you want to make a friend, go to a shrimp boil. Because when you’re elbow deep in shells and butter, you’re going to need someone to hand you a napkin. Amplify Culture is hosting a shrimp boil at Tribe (316 Delaware St.) from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Tickets, which include beer and sides (red beans and rice), are $30.
