30 Stories in 30 Days | From ‘Star Wars’ to Mandolins

April 25, 2016  |  Flatland  |  2 min read

Videographer Alden Miller has created a challenge for himself: In the month of April, tell one story about Kansas City each day. Yup, that’s each and every day. Here at Flatland, we’ve teamed up with the dangerously-living Mr. Miller to showcase that work throughout the month.

We check in with him at Alchemy New Media weekly to see how #30storiesin30days is going.

Week 3

What happens when you cross Storm Troopers with a pet shelter? “Boba Fetch” happens. The KC Pet Project teams up with the 70th Explorers Garrison of The 501st Legion for its largest event supporting pet adoptions in the KC area. (Video above)

More videos

Hidden in the Plaza district is the The Fret Shop. There, Mark Franzke crafts and repairs mandolins, banjos, and guitars. Most importantly, he’s building a community of musicians who come to jam.

Also, in Lenexa, Kansas, Lenexa’s Angels is a group of vivacious artists bringing focus and light to the many facets of the human condition. And there’s The Synergist, Holly Rich Godfrey, who  founded Catalyst Scrubs as a way of helping women in disadvantaged communities by providing a platform for them to earn a living wage.

Week 2

Some people are cat people, some people are dog people. Nic and Angela? Robot people. For the story from the Nerdbot founders, and more videos from the second week of April, see our round-up.

Week 1

Here’s another round-up of the first week of videos, which took you everywhere from Boulevard brewery to Kauffman Stadium.

— Keep watching as @FlatlandKC follows Alden Miller and his quest to make a month of stories around the people and places that make Kansas City tick.

Reading these stories is free, but telling them is not. Start your monthly gift now to support Flatland’s community-focused reporting.

The Weekender

It’s a long holiday weekend. Emphasis on the “long.” Sure, we all love spending time with family, but we also love getting out of the house.
