Burnt Ends Chili Dog & Other Weekend Possibilities

The classic chili dog is getting an upgrade today as Plowboys Barbeque (1111 Main St.) debuts its latest menu item: a burnt end chili dog.

“We’ve done chili dogs before, but the star was chili and the hot dog was just the vehicle,” Plowboys chief pitmaster and co-owner Todd Johns said. “This is taking the idea to a whole new level, now you’ve got something special with the hot dog and chili.”

Plowboys will be putting their burnt end chili on a certified Angus beef brisket hot dog inside of a Roma Bakery bun.

“We’re steaming and smoking the dogs. Boiling helps retain the moisture, that’s where the flavor is,” Johns said. “Then, it’s just a kiss of smoke.”

The chili dogs, on the daily menu for fall and winter, can be topped with chopped white onion, shredded cheddar cheese and jalapeños.

You’re never too young to start loving chocolate. Keep the candy train rolling with a Chocolate Tasting Party for Kids at 11 a.m. Saturday. The free event hosted by Flatland contributor Pete Dulin is put on by the Mid-Continent Public Library at its Smithville branch (120 Richardson St., Smithville, Missouri). It’s for kids over eight years old.

Pair a couple of your favorite vices with the Whiskey & Tobacco Fest from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Burley House (357 Main St., Weston, Missouri). Enjoy whiskeys from High West, Holladay Distillery, Restless Spirits and Bruichladdich, among others. General admission tickets are $30 and VIP tickets (which include entry at 1 p.m.) are $50. There’s also a round-trip shuttle from Kansas City.

Hit the Tater Tot Trail in Lawrence, Kansas, this Saturday. Bon Bon, The Burger Stand, Leeway Franks and the RND Corner Grille will have tater tot specials, beginning at 11 a.m., to benefit Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters.

This is Kansas City, which means you have new barbecue to try. Pullman BBQ (100 S. Main St., Parkville, Missouri) recently opened in Parkville. They do pulled pork rind nachos, pulled chicken sandwiches and brisket sliders with a horseradish cream sauce. When it comes to sides, they’ve got cheesy corn bake and a sweet corn muffin, in addition to beans and slaw.

Pullman isn’t the only new spot in Parkville. Popculture, a popcorn shop, opened last month. We featured them in our #OrderUp series earlier this week, and they’ve got a host of savory and sweet options from coconut curry to dill pickle to chocolate drizzle (white and milk chocolate drizzle over caramel corn).

We could all use more coffee. Benetti’s Coffee Experience (6109 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown, Missouri) has added Sunday hours. They’ll be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Sunday.

There’s a story behind every dish. Delve into the world of Chinese cuisine with The Kansas City Public Library’s screening of “The Search for General Tso,” on Sunday at the Plaza branch (4801 Main St.). The film is part of the library’s series of dementia-friendly screenings. The receptions starts at 1:30 p.m. and the program is at 2 p.m.
