Whiskey & Waffles & Other Weekend Possibilities

Beignets and crepes have come to Westport. Beignet has opened a second location at 3959 Broadway Blvd. The restaurant serves up Southern fare, like po’boy sandwiches, red beans and rice, jambalaya and gumbo. The new Beignet is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The original Beignet is in the City Market.

Comfort food comes in many forms. Case in point, Happy Apple Café (5536 Troost Ave.) is dishing up vegan takes on macaroni and cheese, poutine, and chicken-fried seitan. The Happy Apple Cafe is also home to Cuento Coffee, a micro-roaster that’s rolling out cold brew and coffee kombucha to locations around Kansas City.

Browne’s Irish Marketplace (3300 Pennsylvania Ave.) offers a traditional Irish breakfast on the first Saturday of the month from 8 to 11 a.m. Fill up on eggs, rashers (slices of bacon), bangers (sausage), beans and Irish coffee.

The Shatto Milk Company hosts its annual Family Day at The Farm from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The free event includes a tour, baby calf petting, a look at how they make cheese and a hayride.

Forget syrup. Your waffles need whiskey. The Roasterie (1204 W. 27th St.) hosts Whiskey & Waffles from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The Waffle Iron holds a pop-up at The Roasterie, and they’ll also have Jameson whiskey samples available. You can get a brown butter whiskey maple waffle, a waffle drizzled with barrel-aged maple syrup; or the smoked salmon lox, a waffle topped with smoked salmon, whipped garlic horseradish cream cheese, dill, capers and everything bagel sprinkle.

It’s soup season, and what a glorious season we have in store. ArtsTech (1522 Holmes St.) hosts Kansas City Empty Bowls from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Purchase a bowl, made and donated by a local artist, and they’ll fill it with soup. The event is a benefit for Harvesters. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

On Saturday, you can check out Fall Soup & Craft Days put on by The Friends of the Rice-Tremonti Home Association (8801 E. 66th St., Raytown, Missouri) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They’ll have soup (steak, chicken noodle) and cornbread, as well as locally made crafts for sale. The lunch sales benefit the historic Rice-Tremonti Home.

Beers of the Kaw 2018, a beer tasting that benefits the Friends of the Kaw, is from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Abe and Jake’s Landing (8 E. Sixth St., Lawrence, Kansas). The event features breweries located alongside the Kansas River or in the Kansas River watershed, like Norsemen Brewing Co., Blind Tiger Brewery, and Happy Bassett Brewing Co. Tickets are $25. Food from Drasko’s and Lucia will also be for sale.
