Socks & Hops & Other Weekend Possibilities

The third annual Socks & Hops is from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at City Market (20 E. Fifth St.). The benefit for Swope Health Services pairs local breweries and eateries (Double Shift and Bay Boys Sandwiches, Stockyards and Webster House). Tickets are $45, and guests are encouraged to bring new socks for the Healthcare for the Homeless mobile outreach program.

Dive into Kansas City’s past with Atlas Obscura: Electric Park Revival from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the historic Heim Brewery building (2800 Guinotte Ave.). Learn about the East Bottoms and hear from Dylan Thuras, the founder of Atlas Obscura, before he signs copies of the “Atlas Obscura Explorer’s Journal.” There’s an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, and a collection of Kansas City brewery ephemera will be on display. Tickets are $15 or $32 (which include a signed copy of the book).

Brady’s Public House has opened in the former Mike’s Tavern space at 5424 Troost Ave. Chef Shaun Brady is making traditional Irish food alongside American bar classics. You can get cottage pie, a whiskey-cured salmon, a Scotch egg, fish and chips or curry dusted fries. Brady’s is open from 3 p.m. to midnight Tuesday and Wednesday, and 11 to midnight Thursday through Saturday.

Fancy a little nostalgia you can drink? J. Rieger & Co. has released a Kansas City Whiskey with limited edition holiday packaging inspired by its pre-Prohibition roots. In 1911, three gallons of whiskey would set you back $8.75. Alas, this 750-ml bottle is $35.

Ruby Jean’s Kitchen & Juicery (3000 Troost Ave.) hosts its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The juice and smoothie shop will officially open its doors at 11:11 a.m. They’ll have live music, alongside their drinks (A Few Too Many is beet juice that may change your mind about beets) and gluten-free and vegan-friendly eats (keep an eye out for their sweet potato brownies). They have another location in Kansas City located at 1111 Main St., Suite 165.

Find some internal fortitude at Westport’s seventh annual Strong Ale Fest. The celebration of big beers — those with an alcohol by volume content of more than eight percent —kicks off at 1 p.m. on Saturday at McCoy’s Public House (4057 Pennsylvania Ave.). Work your way through 70 beers (although, please, not all 70) from more than 30 breweries, including COOP Ale Works, Founders Brewing Co., and New Holland Brewing Co. Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door.

If you’re walking and having wine, can we call it cardio? Let’s call it cardio. The 2017 Smithville Wine & Walk is 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Downtown shops will be pouring wine from Ladoga Ridge Winery in Smithville and Four Horses and a Dog out of Excelsior Springs. You can pick up your tickets ($15) at 3 Link Coffee (108 N. Bridge St.), which entitle you to a wine glass, 15 tasting tickets and a wine bag.

If you’d rather sit and sip, White Tail Run Winery and Vineyard (2327 N. 400th Road, Edgerton, Kansas) is serving its fall sangria from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. It’s made with their Chambourcin, a semi-sweet red. They make sangria one Saturday each month. You may recognize the winery from the Overland Park Farmers’ Market, where they had a booth through last month and sold their wine drizzles (a wine reduction that could be used as a glaze or dessert topping).
