Walnut Street Reopening in City Market After 30 Year Absence

Work is well underway on reconnecting Walnut Street through the City Market with completion expected in May.
The city project will reopen Walnut as a two-way street from Third to Fifth streets on weekdays, and is intended to not only improve traffic flow, but make it a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
The street will be closed on busy farmer’s market weekends. The work will not only include reconnecting Walnut, but adding a pedestrian plaza and seating area as well.
Walnut had been a two-way traffic route through the Market up until about 30 years ago. It then essentially became an access lane to the Market’s interior parking spaces with its entrance off Fifth Street and exit onto Third Street.
All businesses in the area will remain open during construction and there will be minimal impact to City Market parking during the process.
Construction is well underway on reconnecting Walnut through the City Market with completion expected in May.
The project was designed by Confluence planning and architecture which is based in the River Market at 417 Delaware.
One of the major goals of the Walnut Street project also is to strengthen businesses on the east end of the Market.
