Day Spa and Physical Therapy Clinic Coming to ‘Baltimore Square’ District

A new day spa and physical therapy clinic are opening in what’s being branded the “Baltimore Square” district, a group of historic buildings in the Ninth and Baltimore area owned by Denver developer Craig Slawson.
The Plaza West Spa is planning to open at the former Kansas City Club at 918 Baltimore and SERC Physical Therapy is opening an outpatient clinic on the ground floor of the Union Carbide building next door at 912 Baltimore.
Slawson has acquired several historic buildings in the area he’s calling Baltimore Square including the Kansas City Club and LaRue buildings, and the Stilwell, Bunker and Marshall buildings along Ninth Street.
The Ninth street properties are among Kansas City’s finest late 19th C commercial buildings. The Ninth Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
“We’re looking at the Baltimore Square as an amazing opportunity to provide services to Commerce Tower, the Garment District and nearby condos such as a spa, bar and restaurants,” Slawson said.
In addition to the Baltimore Square properties, Slawson’s real estate entity, Epoch Development, purchased a large portfolio of other properties including several in the River Market and the Martini Corner area of midtown.
He envisions the four-story Kansas City Club building being renovated to become an “urban resort.” Shining Stars Catering already has an operation there. Slawson expects the Plaza West Day Spa @ KC Club and the SERC Physical Therapy facility to be open in December.

Craig Lee, regional director of SERC Physical Therapy said being close to the streetcar was a reason why he chose the Union Carbide space for his clinic.
“Being off the streetcar line was also important for us and we look forward to serving those who live and work in downtown area,” he said in a statement. “Our mission is to inspire and empower people to reach their full potential.”
Plaza West Spa offers spa body services, esthetics, sauna, steam room, hot tub as well as a boutique and packages for special occasions, according to a release from Epoch Development.
SERC Physical Therapy is an outpatient rehabilitation provider with over 50 locations in Kansas City and surrounding areas, according to Epoch. The downtown location will be led by Kayla Lingenfelter, DPT, who is a 2014 graduate of the University of Kansas Medical Center.
