Meet the Makers, Rosé All Day & Other Weekend Possibilities

Affäre (1911 Main St.) has started serving lunch on Thursday and Friday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. You can get weinerschnitzel (fried pork cutlet), house-made bratwurst, and zwiebelsuppe (a soup made with caramelized spring onions). The full menu is here.

Get a chance to meet Tastemakers and Feast Magazine’s Cat Neville in person at Meet The Makers, a live event featuring Kansas City area artisan food producers, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Plexpod (300 E. 39th St.).

Neville will moderate a panel about the Kansas City episode of Tastemakers, which airs on Kansas City PBS, and interview Green Dirt Farm’s Sarah Hoffman, The Rieger’s Howard Hanna and TerraVox’s Jerry Eisterhold. Tickets ($20), include the show and a tasting afterward in a Makers Market.

After the success of the Miracle Pop-Up (the Christmas wonderland of drinks) at the Rockhille Grille (2000 Grand Blvd.), it makes sense that another pop-up would find a home at the Crossroads bar and grill. The Monarch Bar is hosting a cocktail bar on First Fridays at the Rockhille Grille, kicking off this Friday, through September. The bar will feature a DJ and is open from 5 to 11:30 p.m.

It’s not summer without fried dough. Old Shawnee Days, a carnival in Shawnee Town 1929, runs Thursday through Sunday. There’s a parade on Saturday at 10 a.m., live performances from acrobats, dancers and singers, a pie baking contest and all the fair food (read: smoked turkey legs) you could want.

On the Missouri side, you can venture out to Lee’s Summit Downtown Days Friday through Sunday. There’s a carnival, live music, two beer tents, and plenty of heart-stopping treats (kettle corn, funnel cake and root beer). Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear are the headliners on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.

If you need the excuse, it’s National Rosė Day (1829 McGee St.) on Saturday. KC Wineworks is hosting Rosė All Day from noon to 10 p.m. to celebrate the release of Chambourcin Rosė. In addition to chilled wine, they’ll also have froze wine slushies.

Hawaiian Bros. opened Wednesday at 12120 College Blvd. in Overland Park, Kansas. Get Huli Huli chicken (grilled chicken marinated in soy sauce and ginger, among other spices), macaroni salad or Dole Whip (the soft serve pineapple treat made famous by Disneyland.).The Overland Park eatery is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. This is the third location for Hawaiian Bros., which also has restaurants in Belton and Lawrence.

Eat your way across Greece at the St. Dionysios Greek Festival, which runs Friday through Sunday. The outdoor festival in the St. Dionysios Greek Orthodox Church’s parking lot (8100 W. 95th St., Overland Park, Kansas) features spanikopites (pastry stuffed with spinach and feta), gyros, dolmathes (rice and beef-stuffed grape leaves), and baklava sundaes (honey-soaked pastry topped with ice cream).

The Replay Lounge (946 Massachusetts St., Lawrence, Kansas) hosts Taco Wars — a taco tasting competition among local spots like La Parilla, Lark A Fare and Mass St. Fish House & Raw Bar, from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday. There’s a $10 cover charge, which includes the taco tasting, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the ACLU of Kansas.
