Color Between The Wines & Other Weekend Possibilities

Having trouble finding your moment of zen? Top Hat Winery (120 S. Main St., Independence, Missouri) is holding a Color Between the Wines Adult Coloring Event from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. You’ll get all you need to color and a glass of wine for $10.

Caffetteria, a new concept from The Mixx founder Jo Marie Scaglia, opened earlier this week in The Shops of Prairie Village (25 On The Mall, Prairie Village, Kansas). Caffetteria is a cafe and marketplace with dine-in and grab-and-go options. It has breakfast (chia pudding, ricotta, lemon and honey on toast, sweet potato hash), lunch (poke bowl) and dinner (roasted curry cauliflower), with inspiration taken from across the globe. Caffetteria is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Scaglia comes from a restaurant family. Her father, Mario Scaglia, opened the original Mario’s Grinder Shop in Westport in 1969. Mario’s (204 Westport Road) closed late last year, but Shelia’s Grinder Shop has opened in its place. Shelia Shields, a Mario’s employee for more than three decades, is making meatball grinders (the essential bread plug that keeps your meatballs well insulated and snug inside the crusty bread) and pasta salad (the secret is Italian dressing) in the same style as the beloved sub shop. Shelia’s is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Freezing Moo (13123 State Line Road) is now open. The ice cream is made by adding toppings — think fruit or chocolate sauce — on top of a metal plate that sits at a chilly 16 degrees. Sweetened whole milk is then added and folded together with the toppings you pick. When the milk touches the cold plate, it freezes solid and can be “rolled” together with a pair of metal spatulas (see the process in the story below). It’s the fourth area location for the Thai-style ice cream shop.

Lean in to the St. Patricks’ Day fun at Up-Down (101 Southwest Blvd.). The doors open at 9 a.m., and you can dive into green eggs and ham or corned beef pizza. If you feel like pairing it with something, they’ll have green KC Pils, Boulevard Irish Ale and Dublin Mules among the drink specials.

The Blue Moose Bar & Grill in the Red Bridge Shopping Center (11134 Holmes Road) is opening for a St. Patrick’s Day Preview Party at 11 a.m. Saturday. Nicki Scruggs will be performing at 2 p.m. The restaurant, the sixth Blue Moose location for KC Hopps, will open for business on Monday, March 26.

Home brewers take center stage at the fifth annual Blarney Brew Off (204 SW Market St., Lee’s Summit, Missouri) from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. At the brew fest, hosted by Grains & Taps and Downtown Lee’s Summit, you can sample brews from more than 100 home brewers. Jazzy B’s Food Truck will also be on hand.
