KC Restaurant Week, Adventures in Dairy & Other Weekend Possibilities

You have 200 excuses to dine out this weekend. The 10th annual Kansas City Restaurant Week kicks off Friday, and more than 200 restaurants are offering prix fixe lunches ($15) and dinners ($33). Restaurant week runs through next Sunday. Check out a few unexpected spots in Jill Silva’s piece highlighting three female chefs you should know right now.

Lazia — the modern Italian steakhouse inside the Crossroads Hotel (2101 Central St.) — is open. Chef Remy Ayesh, previously with Cafe Sebastienne, is spearheading the kitchen that’s kicking out steaks, house-made pasta and burrata (fresh mozzarella cheese made with cream). Lazia is participating in restaurant week and serving up seared trout, a butter-topped flat iron steak and chocolate budino with a cherry balsamic whipped topping.

Life was once about the simple joys. A biscuit. Homemade butter. The North Kansas City Public Library (2251 Howell St., North Kansas City, Missouri) is hosting a Little House on The Prairie Party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The library will have a re-enactor from Atkins-Johnson Farm, crafts and games.

As long as we’re homesteading, you can learn how to make your own cheese ($20) at Bacchus & Barleycorn (6633 Nieman Road, Shawnee, Kansas) from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Class participants will learn about the process of cheese-making, cheese-making equipment and how to make mozzarella.

You might not need any help getting fired up for a Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff game, but what if I told you could get your coffee and beer in one single sip? Limitless Brewing Co. will sample its coffee stout at Maps Coffee (13440 Santa Fe Trail Drive, Lenexa, Kansas) from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Limitless tapped Maps’ espresso for the beer.

If you can’t make it to the stadium but need to get off the couch, you’ve got plenty of options to watch the football game this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Kelly’s Westport Inn (500 Westport Road) will have the heaters going on their outdoor decks and $5 Tank 7’s (Mahomes help us all). Brew Lab (7925 Marty St.) is making chili cheese dogs and will have $3 cream ales.

Did you know it’s Second Saturday in North Kansas City? The retail-centric NKC celebration has a host of food and drink draws. Big Rip Brewing Co. will be randalling (pushing a beer over an ingredient to infuse flavor and aroma) its dry stout through vanilla beans and coconut, Callsign Brewing has a new cream ale on tap, Chappell’s has bottomless mimosas, Smokin’ Guns has smoked bologna and Velo Garage and Tap House is hosting a playoff watch party.

The Johnson County Public Library (9875 W. 87th St., Overland Park, Kansas), in conjunction with the Food Policy Council of Johnson County, is screening the documentary, “Wasted: The Story of Food Waste,” from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday as part of a larger discussion about hunger and food waste.
