KC Hoop Girl Puts a New Spin on Exercise

Name a better way to lose weight than standing in your own living room.

We’ll wait.

Five years and 30 pounds ago, Sirenna Beyer’s doctor told her that she desperately needed to start getting healthy.

As she walked out of the doctor’s office, she just happened to see a video of a girl hula hooping. Mesmerized, she decided to embrace her inner child and pick up a hoop herself.

Every day for months, Beyer would stand in her living room swinging her hips to the rhythm of 1970s soul music, and the weight started to melt off.

Since then, Beyer says it’s been her mission to “spread the word of hoop in Kansas City.” At least three times a week she dons furry white boots, grabs her hoop and a boom box, and teaches others to find joy in hooping.

Watch the attached video (above) to learn more about her hoop dancing alter ego “KC Hoop Girl.” If you’d like to join in, head to the west side of Loose Park from 5:45-6:45 p.m. on a Thursday. Indoor classes are Wednesdays and Saturdays at Village Presbyterian Church from 5:45-6:45 p.m.
