Maker Faire & Other Weekend Possibilities

Maker Faire Kansas City, the festival for creators and inventors, is Saturday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at Union Station. KCPT will have a Kids Zone with interactive activities for kids, there is a pop-up craft fair from Strawberry Swing, scale models of R2-D2, beekeepers and food trucks for when you get hungry.

Freestyle Poke (509 Delaware St.) has opened in the River Market. You can either order one of its signature bowls or make your own. Freestyle Poke serves poke bowls, which are a bed of rice, quinoa, lettuce, or zucchini noodles, mixed with a protein and vegetables, tossed in a marinade and then sprinkled with toppings and a sauce. So, you might put raw ahi tuna on forbidden rice with edamame, snow peas and cucumber, then add Sriracha ponzu, wasabi toasted coconut and a wasabi mayo. For drinks, they serve alkaline and aloe water, as well as beer and wine. You can also get soft serve ice cream for dessert (vegan ice cream is an option, too).

Bun Mee Phan has reopened in its new location at 4011 N. Oak Trafficway. You can once again get Vietnamese sandwiches and donuts. This is what you would call one stop eating.

The Bingham-Waggoner Historical Society is hosting Breakfast & Blooms at the Bingham-Waggoner Estate (313 W. Pacific Ave., Independence, Missouri) between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday. Tickets ($25), which include breakfast, a garden tour and tour of the property, must be purchased in advance.

There’s a free screening of “The Invisible Vegan,” at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gregg/Klice Community Center (1600 John Buck O’Neil Way). The film, presented by Hip Hop is Green KC, Organic Soul KC and VegKC, is followed by a discussion with the documentary’s director and a meal prepared by Organic Soul KC.

Peru Meets The Prairie — a collaboration between Peruvian and Kansas City chefs — is a four-day series of events that runs through Sunday. The Sundry hosts seafood and bubbles tonight, street food is the focus of a dinner Friday at Repeal 18th, there’s Family Day at Crum’s Heirloom Farms on Saturday, and a six-chef, six-course dinner at The Rieger on Sunday. Chefs Camila Chavez and John Evans Ravenna will be visiting from Peru to cook alongside Jarocho’s Carlos Falcon, The Rieger’s Howard Hanna, The Farmhouse’s Michael Foust, and Repeal 18th’s Remy Ayesh. The events are helping to raise money for Por Eso, a Peruvian non-profit that focuses on nutrition and combating hunger in the Andean villages.

The Roasterie is hosting a free ice cream social from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday on the patio of its Main Street Café (4223 Main St.). It’ll have a sundae bar with Belfonte ice cream, balloon animals and samples of its cold brew and nitro cold brew coffee.

Cinetopia (5724 W. 136th Terrace, Overland Park, Kansas) is throwing a Summer Luau on its patio from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday. It’ll have food from Hawaiian Brothers, rum tasting and shaved ice.

The Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City (9810 W. 79th St., Overland Park, Kansas) is hosting Filipina Fiesta on Saturday and Sunday at the Filipino Cultural Center. There will be Filipino cuisine, singing and dance performances, and arts and crafts available for purchase.
