Dive-In Movie & Other Weekend Possibilities

A new food truck season kicks off at Farm to Market Bread Co. (100 E. 20th St.) from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Flatland contributor Jill Silva hosts a gathering of trucks with Food Truck Friday in the bakery’s Crossroads parking lot. Magnolia’s on the Move, Cirque du Sucre, Beauty of the Bistro, Crave, and El Tenedor all plan to be on hand. Looking for menu advice? Fill up on paella and ice cream sandwiches.

Settle in with some popcorn and a classic film. Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation is hosting a free screening of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” Friday night. The doors to the Legacy Park Amphitheater (897 NE Bluestem Drive, Lee’s Summit, Missouri) open at 7 p.m., and the movie will start close to 8:30 p.m. (after sunset).

Or perhaps you’d rather enjoy your movies from the comfort of a pool. The City of Fairway hosts its 15th annual Dive-in Movie at the Fairway Pool (6136 Mission Road, Fairway, Kansas) at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $3, and that includes popcorn. You have to bring your own floatie if you’re watching “Trolls” from the water. There will be concessions.

Fringe Beerworks (224 SE Douglas St., Lee’s Summit, Missouri) is hosting its second annual Christmas in July from 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday. There will be a white elephant gift exchange, an ugly sweater contest and 12 “big beers of Christmas.” Founders KBS and CBS, along with Mothers Brewing’s Scotch MILF and Southern Tier Samoa This, are part of the beer lineup.

Peach season has arrived, just not in the way you expected. KC Wine Co. (13875 Gardner Road, Olathe, Kansas) is throwing a peach party this weekend. It’ll have frozen peach bellini slush, yard games and live music. KC Wine is open from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Turkic Food Festival is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Dialogue Institute of Kansas City (4215 Shawnee Drive, Kansas City, Kansas). The festival will feature crafts, as well as gyros, lentil balls, stuffed flatbread and baklava.

The Waffle Iron has set up shop inside the former Hank Charcuterie space (Hank is moving to Kansas City and being reborn as Fox & Pearl on the Westside later this year) at 1900 Massachusetts St. in Lawrence, Kansas. The waffle pop-up (if you see lemon curd, say yes to the mess) runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, check Facebook for hours and any specials before heading over to the space. Take a tour of Town’s Tom Distilling Co. (1701 Main St.) on Saturday (2:30, 4:30, 6 or 8 p.m.). The roughly hour-long tour ($10) is a guided walk through the distillery and includes samples of the spirits made by Tom’s Town.
