Bennie, Basie and Bird & Other Weekend Possibilities

Discover Kansas City’s rich history of jazz at Bennie, Basie and Bird: An Evening of Kansas City Jazz at the Mutual Musicians Foundation (1823 Highland Ave.) from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Listen to live jazz and learn about jazz icons who played and lived in KC. Tickets, which include food and drinks, are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. The evening is a benefit for the event organizers: MMF, the Jackson County Historical Society and the Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors.

The Kansas City Community Gardens hosts KC Made Happy Hour from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday night in the gardens at 6917 Kensington Ave. Local makers, Boulevard beer and food from Pita for Good and Nikki G’s Soul Q Bistro will be available.

The Blue Line (529 Walnut St.), a hockey bar in the River Market, is hosting Letty’s Birthday Bash at 6 p.m. Friday night. The party is for manager Leticia Stegall. The Kansas City Star recently profiled her, telling the story of her deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She is married to the bar’s owner Steve Segall and has been running The Blue Line from Mexico via webcam and text message since March of this year. Partygoers will connect with Stegall on webcam.

The Savoy at 21c (219 W. Ninth St.) is now open. The classic steakhouse, the Savoy Grill, was reborn as part of the renovations and opening of the 21C Museum Hotel in Kansas City. Executive chef Joe West, previously of Bluestem and Stock Hill and his own pop-up Kusshi, is partnered with beverage director Scott Tipton, who has been behind the bar at Julep and Manifesto. The dinner menu features steak tartare, escargot tortellini, and lobster Newberg (lobster poached in butter). The Savoy at 21c is open for dinner only from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The bar opens at 5 p.m. daily and closes at midnight Sunday through Thursday and 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Cacao Restaurante has relocated from Prairie Village to Overland Park, Kansas. The new location is at 1046 W. 103rd St. in Overland Park. The original restaurant was open for two years in the former Kokopelli’s space.

Cacao serves pozole (soup with hominy, chicken, shredded cabbage and radishes), pork chili verde tacos, enchiladas in mole, and tortas (cochinita pibil, which is pork marinated in citrus and achiote). The new restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

You can never have enough ice cream options in summer. Ice Cream Bae and Boh Buh, a bubble tea shop with macaron ice cream sandwiches, have opened inside the Made in KC Marketplace (4640 Wornall Road) on the Country Club Plaza. Ice Cream Bae has birthday cake, charcoal, red velvet or salted blue corn cones. You can then top the cone or a cup with ice cream (matcha and ube are available alongside chocolate, vanilla bean, and coconut) and add-ins (cookie dough, Cap’n Crunch).

The Mockingbird Lounge (204 Orchard St., Kansas City, Kansas) hosts Ms. Tea, a tea dance organized by Electrosexual, from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
