Happy Hour in the Gardens & Other Weekend Possibilities

Sip beer from the KC Bier Co., munch on popcorn, and catch a flick on the rooftop terrace of the Central Library (14 W. 10th St.) tonight at 8 p.m. The Kansas City Public Library and The Pitch present the Off-the-Wall film series and tonight, “Wet Hot American Summer,” is on the big screen. The doors open at 8 p.m., and the movie starts at 8:45 p.m. It’s bring your own blanket or lawn chair.
Kansas City Community Gardens is hosting Happy Hour in The Gardens (6917 Kensington Ave.) tonight from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Take a tour of the gardens, listen to live music, and have some Boulevard beer. You’re welcome to bring your own food, beer or wine, as well. It’s $5 to attend (free for monthly donors).

Get your funnel-cake fix at the Wyandotte County Fair, which runs through Saturday. You can check out the 4-H in action, see go-kart races, and dive into fair fare. The fair is 6 to 11 p.m. tonight and 5 to 11 p.m. tomorrow. Admission is $5 per car, with a separate charge for carnival rides.
Midtown has a new coffee shop. Monarch Coffee [see our feature below from March] is open at 3550 Broadway Blvd. The new venture from Jaime and Tyler Rovenstine features a black-and-white motif and batch-brew coffee delivered tableside.

Betty Rae’s (7140 Wornall Rd.) is set to debut its burnt end ice cream, a collaboration with Joe’s Kansas City, on Sunday in honor of National Ice Cream Day. Joe’s KC Burnt Ends & Sauce ice cream is speckled with candied burnt ends and caramel laced with Joe’s barbecue sauce. In last year’s Burnt Legend, KCPT’s 30-minute documentary that told the story of burnt ends, Michael Pearce of SLAP’s BBQ dreamed of burnt end ice cream. Dream no longer, Mr. Pearce.
