Happy Gillis’ Breakfast All Day & Other Weekend Possibilities

Happy Gillis Cafe & Hangout (549 Gillis St.) unveiled a New Year’s resolution — breakfast all day — that one hopes will last all year.
“People would be on the verge of tears that they couldn’t get our breakfast sandwich,” co-owner and chef Josh Eans said. “We thought this could make people happy and make a splash for the new year.”
The menu won’t change. It will still be anchored by the biscuits and gravy and said, near tear-inducing, breakfast sandwich. In the past, Happy Gillis served breakfast all day on the weekends, but cut off diners on the weekdays at 11 a.m. They will now offer the breakfast menu until close (3 p.m.) Tuesday through Friday.
You can now take a little bit of Teocali (2512 Holmes St.) home with you. The midtown Mexican restaurant has jarred its salsa. You can get mild or hot to go and then dip to your heart’s content.
The Red Door Woodfired Grill (6324 Brookside Plaza) is open in the former Blue Grotto space in Brookside. It shares a menu —think burgers, flatbread pizzas and wood-fired salmon — with its sister location in Leawood, Kansas.
Torn Label Brewing Company (1708 Campbell St.) is releasing beers in cans. You can get your mitts on them this Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. at a can release party at the brewery along with an Australian meat pie from the Pie Hole food truck.
The Kansas City Automotive Museum (15095 W. 116th St., Olathe, Kansas) is hosting Cars & Coffee this Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. Check out a sweet ride, or bring your own, and warm up with free coffee and donuts.
Ten Thousand Villages Overland Park (7947 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas) is hosting a pop-up for the Tamale Kitchen — an organization that started in the Northeast as a way to create jobs in the community by selling tamales — on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
You can still get vegetables in winter. The KC Organics and Natural Market (11091 Holmes Road) is hosting its Winter Market from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday. They’ll have herbs, peppers, greens, sweet potatoes, jams and local honey.
Like Me Lighthouse is hosting its third annual Chili Cook-off at Californos (4124 Pennsylvania Ave.) this Sunday from noon to 2:30 p.m. They’ll have four categories: best chili, best vegetarian, most unusual and spiciest. Buckle up, buttercup. It’s $15 to enter your chili or $5 to attend as a guest.
