Oddly Correct’s Open Forum & Other Weekend Possibilities

January 27, 2017  |    |  3 min read

Oddly Correct (3940 Main Street) is hosting an open forum tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. It’s a chance to chat about coffee with folks who enjoy drinking it and those who are employed by coffee roasters and shops in the metro area. This is also a chance to sample BKS Artisan Ales (read their story here), which is slated to open in Brookside later this year.

The Urban Cafe is now open at 4101 Troost Avenue. They serve breakfast (smoothie bowls, egg sandwiches, grab and go yogurt parfaits) and lunch (grilled sandwiches, wraps). Vegans might opt for the chickpea tacos or collard green wraps made with quinoa and a Thai almond vinaigrette.  Urban Cafe is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Plate (6201 Oak Street) is growing in Brookside and that means taking over the adjacent Season+Square space — both are owned by Andrea Morrow Joseph and her husband Christian Joseph. Season+Square (6205 Oak Street) is hosting a Happy Hour and Hugs at 5:30 p.m. tonight to celebrate the success of Plate and continue the sale of sundry items as the retail shop will become part of the expanding dining room for Plate.

Boulevard’s Monthly Maker series is a Rise & Shine Early Riser Party. Head over to the Beer Hall at 9 a.m. on Sunday for cinnamon raisin French toast casserole, candied bacon, and a full pour of Early Riser Coffee Porter. The breakfast celebration will also include a mug and a chance to meet Boulevard brewers and roasters from Maps Coffee, the Lenexa, Kansas, shop that collaborated with Boulevard on Early Riser. Tickets are $20.

Celebrate Kansas Day on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Great Harvest Bread Co. (4002 W 83rd Street, Prairie Village, Kansas). They’ll have Kansas quilts on display, as well as a civics quiz where you’re playing for a free loaf of sunflower state bread.

You can add another taco spot to your taco crawl to-do list. Taco Luchador (101 Armour Road) is open in North Kansas City. They’ve got tacos, burritos, bowls, and salads. For drinks, they make their own horchata, agua fresca, and limeade.

You can celebrate Chinese New Year this Sunday at The Nelson-Atkins Museum (4525 Oak Street) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This marks the 21st festival for the museum and they’ll have yo-yo demonstrations, dance performances, and a fashion show. The event is free, but there is food for sale from Bo Ling’s and a full bar with plum wine. Deschutes is also hosting a tap night in celebration of the New Year on Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m. at Bier Station (120 E Gregory Boulevard). Think custom fortune cookies, Chinese cuisine, and Deschutes special tappings (smoked gose and Pacific Wonderland dry-hopped lager, among them).

The first of three dinners in the Library Dinner Series is at Stock Hill (4800 Main Street) on Sunday at 6 p.m. The new steakhouse on the Plaza will feature a seven-course custom meal with wine pairings for $100. The meal includes smoked pork head, a scallop dusted with dehydrated lobster roe, a 28-day, dry-aged beef strip loin with emulsified butter, and a black sesame panna cotta. The full menu is here.
